Cosby: Trayvon Martin case about guns, not race

By AP Staff

WASHINGTON (AP) - Actor and comedian Bill Cosby says the debate over the killing of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer should be focused on guns, not race.

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" aired Sunday, Cosby said calling George Zimmerman a racist doesn't solve anything. Cosby says the bigger question is what Zimmerman was doing with a gun, and who taught him how to behave with it.

The shooting of the 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 has ignited a nationwide debate about race and self-defense.

Cosby said during the interview, which was taped Thursday afternoon, that he once owned a gun but no longer does. He says there is a need to get guns off the streets, and that people should be taught to use every possible alternative before shooting someone.

They are stocking up ‘Ammunition’ against gun ownership in time for NObama’s second term (which they are convinced he will get)

Just as the heads of the NRA say about the 2012 election, “Most Dangerous in Our Lifetime”, we must stop him in his evil tracks.

Cosby needs to keep to comments about things he’s well versed on…..like humor and child psychology…..obviously he hasn’t got a clue about what the 2nd Amendment is about.

I disagree. If you read this story carefully, he said that he used to own a firearm.

He is not arguing against the elimination of gun ownership, rather he advocating responsible ownership.

I watched most of the interview. Muslim terrorists held at GITMO, should be tortured with Bill Cosby interviews.

Cosby, a millionaire, a media elite effete God, can well afford, security, against would be bad boys, and the normal icky Sheeple, as can, and does, countless elite. How many times have we heard the elite, pontificate on disarming, The People? Lots.

As I contemplated never tuning on the TV again, it was clear that Cosby has NO clue about The Bill of Rights, and likely, like The Fraud that sits in the Oval Office, The Constitution. So he would be in good company with so many in the Senate & Congress.

I was also reminded in a comment that I made on GOPUSA, that had Zimmerman, been attacked, head slammed down on concrete, face punched, by a leather clad White Skinhead, with tattoo swastikas, we would NOT have heard a thing if Zimmerman, dropped a dime, and capped this guy. And certainly, we would have been spared listening to Cosby attempting to speak.

Zimmerman would have then been Hispanic, Liberal, and not the magical construct, WHITE Hispanic. In fact, Zimmerman might have been hailed as a great hero, should anything have been released! If you kill the right kind of human, no problemo, and more importantly,NO BILL COSBY!

Bill Cosby still doesn’t understand that guns don’t kill people, and bad boys are in prison because of the bad things they do.

I guess Cosby is reacting to his thoughts of the loss of his son in a shooting incident. As tragic as it was, if Cosby’s son had the use of a firearm to defend himself, maybe he would be alive today.

It seems that all liberals think crooks don’t have the ability or will not kill someone without a weapon and if you have one to defend yourself, it’s somehow not fair. What’s not fair is that most bad guys don’t care if they are being fair with you. Somehow it’s a crime if you want to keep yourself from being a fatality.

Having a concealed frearm does not give a license to kill anyone. It is important for a carrying person to use restraint and only use his weapon when the situation calls for it. Most carriers know they can be prosecuted for improper useage of their privilege. It is not to be taken lightly the responsibility they have to carry a weapon. Liberals seem to think everyone with a weapon is “gun-happy” or something.

Every state that has enacted carry laws, have seen a drop in violent crimes. Offenders are not being given 4,5, or 20 times to stop trying to be a career criminal. They find out that some of their potential victims might kill them. Switzerland has the lowest crime rate in the world, because everyone in the country is trained in the proper use of a firearm and has one in their house. Gun control is making sure you hit the right target.

      Hi RP,

I will admit that i’m very conflicted about the carry laws.

For me it is one of those things with a lot of pros and also cons.

Yes, we have the right to defend ourselves, and for that reason the second amendment is very important to me.
Especially in a nation where a lot of criminals do have (sometimes heavy) weapons themselves as well.
What would have happened to Zimmerman if he had not had a weapon? He might very well have been beaten so hard that he could have suffered brain damage at a minimum.

The other side of it is, the risk that weapons get used either prematurely, or accidentally, or just get in the hands of the wrong people.

One thing you mentioned in particular concerns me. The US has extremely high numbers of jailed people as portion of its population.
I immigrated from Europe and grew up in a country where weapon possession was not legalized as it is here. The number of people in prison there is one of the lowest in the world as a portion of the population. I wanted to mention this, because it is different from the Swiss example, and yet still a valid example.

In summary I’m not saying one solution is good and another is bad. Like I said, I don’t have a magic answer. I just wish we could find better ways of lowering crime rates in this country than by just arguing that we all should have a weapon!

And yes, once people do get a weapon, there should be good training and registration. Knowing when to use or not to use the weapon comes first, next the capability to hit the right target when it comes down to that last resort!

agent007 & all: Our Founders, eventually, enumerated the unalienable rights of WE the People, talked of in The Declaration of Independence, through The Bill of Rights. These rights are not, like in Europe, Canada, Australia…, issued out by The State to Subjects of The State, that can be revoked, removed… . These are rights, that are bestowed by our Creator, they are Natural Rights.

For example, Great Briton, by act of The State, revoked double jeopardy protection, something that had hundreds of years of application. They did this, to prosecute, the right kind of people, Britons, in a minority related crime. There! Over with! Done! Move along… or else!

The, Finest Hour Country, the one that stood up to Hitler, and shepherded in Europe’s second self genocidal suicide in a century, for ? freedom…, has effectively, ended free speech for it’s Subjects, and has disarmed them too. What would Winston think?

The Second Amendment, is not about self protection, hunting… it is very much about, defining that The People are NOT Subjects, not minions of Das Stat. It is the ultimate check of a Free People, to State Tyranny, something that the Founders were most concerned about in their little experiment in a Representative Republic, not a Democracy.

This word, democracy, is so casually thrown about, used, The Founders would be appalled, as democracy they said, would be the quickest way to end the Republic, leading to tyranny.

Europe, has had two horrific World Wars, utilizing it’s Subjects, for State run, ah, “events”. In the course of war, many of those Subjects were done away with, as all powerful States deemed such as unworthy, unfit to live. Easy to do so, when The People, are but mere unarmed Subjects of the State.

Per our jails, the prisons being full. In Criminal Law, we got to study just who resides as, ah, wards of the State. We were free from the Political Correctness Tyranny, and could study the people, and the statistics. Lets just say, we are NOT Switzerland, something that The Founders wanted per population type, to ensure the working of the Representative Republic.

You should be glad that the prisons are bulging full, as this is a one price paid, for, diversity.

Also, we have so many laws, specifically our drug laws, that there are multitudes of people who get ensnared in doing what they attempt to do, selling, distribution, stealing to obtain…, and in a perverse way, The State, becomes more powerful. Another subject…

Also, and this is not discussed, since there has been a willful attempt, to repopulate this country –see the once, “Great” Briton– our prisons are full of illegal aliens, caught in multitudes of criminal activity, but oddly enough, not for being here illegally in the first place!

Finally, there is a cost, a price for Liberty, for Freedom. Those who want SAFETY, give up Liberty & Freedom, submitting all to the tyranny of the State, that implements, oversees Safety. Accidents, injuries, death come as a price. What is NEVER discussed, are the countless, not really measurable, crimes that are NOT committed because we have the right to weapons.

In Criminal Law, we studied the mentality of criminals. In short, they usually, the cagey ones, not completely stupid, size up their prey. The more helpless, the better. Guns provide, mystery, surprises, and criminals don’t care much for that. Barge into my house, and I will make every attempt to insure that a hail of bullets greets the intruder. Hello! Criminals, usually, are not wanting to see Saint Peter… in their “business” pursuits.

007, get rid of the puny Walther PPK that you carry, and go for nearly, one half inch, (.45 hollow point) of serious, automatic business. Cheers! Not time for a martini, just yet, shaken, not stirred.

      Good post lwesson:

I especially agree with you on your main point: 2nd amendment was NOT intended to protect against regular criminals, but to protect the individual against an overzealous/oppressive State/Government.

The benefits of guns as deterrent is nice of course.

And I agree that the majority of criminals in our jails is NOT due to gun use.

It would be good to research and find out in more detail why (and for what types of crimes) those people are in our jails.
I would be surprised if the fact that we have like at least 10 times as many in our jails compared to many European nations (as a percentage of total population) would be JUST because of illegal immigrants. Would love to find some statistics.

Thank you 007. My criminal law class, was in the last ice age, being frozen, thawed out, I am now, just a simple caveman. LOL! Saturday Night Live, had a hilarious skit by Phil Hartman on this. ( He was murdered by a lunatic, drug addled Wife. Indeed, a sad price paid. )

The stats have changed. Some months back, I glanced at some stats per illegals in jail. Will, have to go back, but I recall thinking that the #’s were most impressive.

Some years ago, I saw some stats on those in jail in Europe, being there for political crimes. Very sobering, and in need of a martini. Cheers!

Unfortunately,Bill Cosby has put his foot right in his mouth,as many entertainment elites tend to do this day and age, with his remarks on the problem with crime in this country. It`s a shame that a talented person such as he is,doesn`t take the time or the iniciative to educate himself on gun statistics, and their reference and facts in relation to the crime rate dropping where law-abiding citizens are allowed to protect themselves from those who refuse to abide by our laws.If his son had been armed there is a very good chance that he would be alive today, and that is a fact!

It is neither of those things. How many cases have been decided in courts do to specifically race? Few! A gun is a fabricated piece of material and has never killed anyone. It is about irresponsible people doing things that maybe they shouldn’t. Why was a kid walking around and why was he shot? The court will decide.

Why don’t the radical left and media say Obama is white? Obama is as white as Zimmerman. The blacks and the left always use white-black race on issues when they think that it is to their advantage. Americans fought for the black’s freedom. So, stop using race for your stupid agendas or fame. Laws are on the books that say that everyone is equal so just enforce the laws. The government seems to make a big deal when it is white to black and not any other race combinations.

I respect Mr Cosby’s opinion but, do not see it the way he does. The problem is not guns. If Trayvon Martin had been stabbed would that have changed the outcome?
If Zimmerman had meant to kill the kid simply because he was black he did not have to call the police first, he could have done it and then claimed he had been attacked.
I tend to distrust the press when they insist on showing a picture of Trayvon when he was 12 not a recent one at 6 foot two…and we are supposed to believe Zimmerman barely 5 foot 7 attacked him. and ended up with cuts in the head and a broken nose and the kid had not a single sign of the “aggresion” I find nothing wrong with the stand your ground law. A simple self defense could work just as well.
