Jesse Jackson: 'How do we turn pain into power?'

By Kyle Hightower

EATONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Wearing hooded sweatshirts similar to the one that Trayvon Martin wore on the night he was killed, many preachers and worshippers echoed calls for justice Sunday in the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager in Florida last month.

The one-month anniversary of Martin's death is Monday. He was shot while wearing a "hoodie" as he walked home on a rainy night in a gated community. The neighborhood watch volunteer who shot him, 28-year-old George Zimmerman, is the son of a white father and Hispanic mother, and the demands to charge him in Martin's slaying have grown ever louder. He had called police to report the hooded figure as suspicious; the 17-year-old Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea, talking to his girlfriend on his cellphone.

In African-American and other religious centers from Florida to Atlanta, New York and Chicago, messages from pulpits couldn't help but touch on a seemingly avoidable tragedy that continues to be rife with more questions than answers. But while the call continued for the arrest of Zimmerman, there were also pleas to use the incident to spark a larger movement.

"How do we turn pain into power?" the Rev. Jesse Jackson asked a standing-room only congregation of hundreds while preaching at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Eatonville, Fla., about 20 miles from the site of the Sanford shooting. "How do we go from a moment to a movement that curries favor?"

Jackson preached a sermon entitled "The Substance of Things Hoped For." He called for Martin's "martyr" death to be used as an opportunity to revive the Civil Rights Commission and draw attention to long-standing issues. Very young children and teens sat in the choir behind him.

"The blood of the innocent has power," Jackson said to shouts of "Amen" and loud clapping.

Jackson invoked the names of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old boy bludgeoned and shot to death in Mississippi in 1955 for supposedly whistling at a white woman, and slain civil rights figures Medgar Evans and Martin Luther King, Jr.

"There's power in the blood of Emmett Till! There's power in in the blood of Medgar Evers! There's power in the blood of Dr. King!" declared the 70-year-old Jackson, who marched with King.

Jackson made a direct plea to change the "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law that many believe authorities in Florida used to avoid arresting him.

Amid the outcry over the lack of charges against Zimmerman, the Sanford police chief and state's attorney in the case have both stepped aside. The U.S. Justice Department has opened a civil rights probe into the shooting, and a grand jury is scheduled to meet April 10 to consider evidence in the case.

Zimmerman's attorney has said he believes the case falls under Florida's stand-your-ground law, which dictates that a person has the right to stand his or her ground and "meet force with force" if attacked. Attorney Craig Sonner has said Zimmerman is not a racist.

After Jackson's sermon, congregants said the civil rights activist's message resonated.

"This kind of activism never stopped in the church, that's what they do for us in the black community," said 34-year-old Nacia Bradley of Orlando. "That's what they're here to do."

Black churches have long served as catalysts for change and were instrumental during the civil rights era.

"The activism (in the church) is bigger and better than ever," said Kenneth Byers, 47, of Orlando. "Everything Rev. Jackson said was right on time."

At Chicago's St. Sabina Catholic Church, a predominantly black congregation, the Rev. Michael Pfleger wore the hood of his robe over his head while celebrating Mass. Pfleger, who is white, has long spoken out against violence.

During Mass, one congregant held a sign reading, "We are all Trayvon Martin."

In New York City, Middle Collegiate Church pastor Jacqueline Lewis said the church must assume both a spiritual and political role to end "the epidemic" of racism. She encouraged her congregants to send packages of Skittles to Sanford police, sign an online petition and attend an April conference on building multiracial congregations.

It's that sense of activism that resonated with Michael Ambrosini, who left the service wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. He said he attends the church in part because "such violence dictates strong political action, and this church takes action."

In the nation's capital, the pastors of Reid Temple AME in Glenn Dale, Md. and Metropolitan AME in downtown Washington, both wore hoodies.

Reid Temple's pastor, the Rev. Lee P. Washington, put the hoodie on his head and held up a box of Skittles and a can of iced tea before his sermon, "Trusting God When You Don't Understand," in which he discussed the Martin case. Metropolitan AME is just blocks away from the White House, and President Barack Obama worshipped there with his family in January, 2011.

At Atlanta's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Jr. and his father once preached, dozens of people wore hoodies in Trayvon Martin's memory, including the Rev. Raphael Warnock.

"They said his name was Trayvon Martin. But he looked like Emmett Till," said Warnock, referring to the boy whose lynching more than a half-century ago raised awareness of the brutal realities of Jim Crow laws. "At least with Emmett Till someone was arrested. And that was in 1955."

The men charged with killing Till were acquitted by an all-white Mississippi jury, though they later confessed to the crime in a Look magazine article.

Ingrid Lester, 64, showed up for services wearing a hooded sweatshirt with a Skittles wrapper pinned to it. She said the Martin case reminded her of the struggle to end segregation in the 1960s, when she was a teenager. And she said the church had a crucial role to play now, just as it did then.

"We need a voice, and the church is our voice," she said.

At First Iconium Baptist, another predominantly black church in Atlanta, the Rev. Timothy McDonald told congregants at the early Sunday service, "We will not rest until Mr. Zimmerman who killed young Trayvon Martin is arrested. This could have been any one of our children."

Associated Press writers Greg Bluestein and Don Schanche in Atlanta, Verena Dobnik in New York, Michelle Nealy in Chicago, and Sonya Ross in Washington contributed to this report.

The race hustlers are coming out of the woodwork again. The so-called preachers who transparently use their personal hatred and bigotry for the White race all over the country to keep the Blacks under their control. It goes without saying that in the process they also keep themselves in the limelight while lining their pockets full of shakedown money.

“Blacks are under attack,” according to Jackson who accused Obama of being a n***** and threatened to cut off parts of his anatomy because “he was talking down to Blacks.” A so called preacher who has used every name in the book when expressing his belligerent hatred of the Jews, and has blackmailed companies all over this country. Too bad his mistress and love child didn’t get as much attention in the media.

The Hispanic community is supposedly “shocked” that one of their own could kill such an innocent “Black Boy,” and most are referring to Zimmerman as just being “White.” This entire scene is pathetic and I’m sick to death of these flesh eating pimps who live only to create discord wherever they can find it.

Jesse Jacka** has taken the low road again. Power from the death of a child? The very LEAST people could do is wait until all the facts come out. Where is JJ in my town? Black on black gang crime is rampant, but I don’t see him here. The tragedy of this child’s death is being compounded by using him to foment hate. Let him rest in peace. Railroading another person will not bring him back or be justice for him!

This “poor” little baby was 6’2″ tall and had attacked that man. He was expelled from school for 5 days (wonder what caused that?) He also broke that man’s nose.
The picture the press likes to use is years old and taken when he was 12. He was 17 when he attacked that man.
Jesse is just looking for headlines and trouble again.

nancyj – I don’t like Jesse Jackson any more than you. But don’t lose sight of the fact that there is nothing to indicate that the “watchman” was profiling and targeting Martin because he looked “suspicious”, and then even when 911 told him to stay back, he went after Martin. The media has run with this tragedy and doesn’t cover other similar (or reversed) tragedies, but don’t make the victim the criminal. If a guy with a gun is coming at me and threatening me, I might try to defend myself. But there is NO evidence that Martin went after Zimmerman to start a confrontation.

If a man with a gun were coming after me, I doubt if I would attempt to defend myself with a barrel in my face. It isn’t very likely that the gun was pointed at this man and he just came back swinging knocking Zimmerman to the ground. It seems more logical to me that Zimmerman managed to shoot him while being on the ground.

With all the photos of Trayvon the cute twelve year old picture is being distributed to the press when in reality Trayvon didn’t look anything like that young photo and was a very big man. Everyone is now headed to Church in hoodies while the Black Panthers are issuing awards for Zimmerman’s death.

Subtlety is not part of my character, and as far as I’m concerned, this is nothing more than a political play to get Obama re-elected with the help of all the race hustlers.

Put a hood on a white guy and he is assumed to be KKK,,,,Put a hood on a black guy and he becomes the new crying towel symbol of a black hero. Is it not time we start descriminating between sane and stupid? The ability to do so has obviously been taken away from the American people by these insane anti-descrimiation laws which puts fear into the hearts and minds of Americans to think and act ratinally, where we can no longer descrimiate against the face of evil, and a manipulating media and Liberal progressive which distorts it into the face of good when it suits their purpose.

With guys like Jesse, Al and Barak, it has always been about more pain to the people so that they can get more power to themselves, and the sad accomplishments their manipulative ideology acquires and promotes is that most of the pain falls upon their very own people who buy into their madness.

What is even sadder is the “Never let a racial Crisis Go to waste” mentality of a half black, half white half dishonest President who was sent to Washington to unite us but just continues his Liberal agenda of progressively stoking the hatred and division.

Jesse “I like to make up words” Jackson and Al “The 50′s called and they want their hair back” Sharpton are nothing but a bunch of racist race baiters who have never met a tragedy they didn’t like or try to turn into a racial issue that they profit from.
They claim they are for “Civil Rights” but in reality all they care about are incidents (Real or perceived) that involve blacks having their “Civil Rights” violated by those evil White Folks, because if they really did care about every ones civil rights we would have seen them in Kansas City after this happened: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/new…ansas-City.html
      http://www.themoralliberal.com/2012/03/07/was-boy-in-k-c-fire-attack-burned-by-his-schools-racist-teaching/
or gone up to Chicago and protested all the shootings and deaths they had over St. Pat’s day weekend.
If Sharpton and Jackson really cared about Civil Rights or advancing fellow black folks he would stop going out of his way to play the race / victim card and instead address the bigger issue among the black community, which is black on black crime. Black folks are doing a better job of killing each other and holding their people back than the KKK could ever dream of.
Racism is still alive and active, because if it wasn’t scumbags like Jackson and Sharpton wouldn’t be able to profit from it. They need to incite and inflame the black community because that is how they make their living. What really pisses me off is that the mainstream media goes out of their way to help them. We all know that the media keeps portraying T.Martin as some little kid who has just started going through puberty, but did any of you also notice that the media is going out of their way to portray Zimmerman as a “White man” and a “Racist, overzealous wannabe cop?” That is NO ACCIDENT. The MSM and other race baiters out there need this to be a white vs. black thing, but not only that I think it was no accident that the president injected himself into the story either because this, in his opinion, will help to rally the black community come election time. Unfortunately, he is probably right. My hope is that this is Boston 2009 all over again and Obama has once again opened his big *** mouth without all the facts.

    The lynch mob has started.

There is a reported eye witness, who may have been the 911 caller, who has said that mr.Zimmerman was being beaten bloody on the ground, before Trayvon Martin was shot. Apparently there is blood on the scene.

If that proves to be the truth in this instance, will Jackson, and his ilk, be eating his words “We are all Trayvon Martin’.

Black radicals never eat their words – everyone is to scared to talk out against them for fear of being called a racist even when they only speak the truth.

Look even at this artiicle – “is the son of a white father and Hispanic mother”. What the hell is the relevance of this sentence? Was he screaming racial slurs? Has he a record of harassing people just becasue they were black? That determines a racist – not the origin of their heritage.

Let the facts come out – If Zimmerman did have a cracked head and bloody nose as was originally reported (and is now being conveniently overlooked), then he was being beaten. Maybe he should not have followed the “innocent’ kid, but being followed is no justification to beat someone over the head. By statute, it is the fault of the person who escalates to violence that required the defense – even BEFORE Castle Doctrine.

Duty to retreat – well the initial report also pointeed out that Zimmerman was walking back to his truck – retreating – when attacked – another initially reported item now being overlooked.

Castle doctrine works – shoot the crtiminlas before they hurt you or your loved ones.

If in fact there was no justification for this shooting, then Zimmerman should go to jail. It is not the Castle doctrine that decides this, but the FACTS of the incident.

Just like the Cambridge cops acted ‘stupidly’ so shall the truth of this come out.

Yes folks we have in America finally reached a level of Racial equality,,,,the blacks have degenerated into the lowest common demoninator of equal white inequality, prejuduce, maddness, and racial hatred. Prejudging the facts and bolting the gun of a hate paradigm is just what predjudice or pre-judging is all about and the black community has embraced it as fast and as hard in this instance as any White American could envision. Welcome to the world of equality.

. . .”such violence dictates strong political action, and this church takes action.”

This is exactly why Jesse Jackson went to Florida, to stir up a lynch mob. When the rioting starts, he should be arrested and charged with sedition.

The fact that black churches are the hotbeds of activism is the reason race baiters such as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and many others are all “reverends”. That gives them the opportunity to go into those black churches and stir up the mob. Jesse Jackson mentioned an incident that happened in 1955 simply to keep the hate alive.

Would the Black community be outraged if, under the same circumstances, the victim was White, or Hispanic, or Asian? So just who is making a racial issue of this?

There can now be no justice, because the only outcome the black community will now accept is Zimmerman must be arrest, and the only judgement they’ll accept is guilty. Expect race riots otherwise.

The panthers have a clue alright, it’s called pay back and they are loving every minute of it as most of them are followers of Louis Farakkhan. To even suggest that they would turn on Jackson for race hustling is a joke.

If we were all to become shrinking violets which many of us are — it still wouldn’t make a difference because they are more racists than some Whites, and will continue to maximize everything humanly possible to promote discord between the races. I can think of black reverends that I admire and respect very much- Dr. Tony Evans from Dallas, Dr. Martin Luther King and J.C. Watts. Why won’t conservative blacks speak out against the likes of Farrakhan, Jackson and Sharpton? These three are opportunists and never met a camera they didn’t like.

“No justice, no peace,” in my mind, is a promise of urban unrest and is an attempt to blackmail the justice system into adopting a certain outcome, facts notwithstanding. Jackson should be arrested as domestic terrorist.

Over the weekend, a writer for the LA Times (picked up on Drudge) used inflammatory language of her own-
“Then along comes the Trayvon Martin case, and facts that are not in contention: Volunteer neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman pursued and then gunned down the unarmed 17-year-old last month…” Facts? Gunned down? Nope- no bias here. Her word choice of “gunned down” is inflammatory. One gets the image of a man fleeing for his life and being shot in the back. An eyewitness has said Zimmerman was on his back being beaten by a larger more imposing Martin at 6’2.” His bloodied head, nose and grass stains on Zimmerman’s clothing might be pertinent, but that doesn’t fit the Jackson/Sharpton template.

What about Martin’s background? Not that it excuses his death, but if he was a magnet for trouble or had a record with law enforcement or school officials, then the case for Zimmerman acting in self defense would be stronger. The cherubic photo as a 12 year-old is intended to manifest certain opinions and feelings- again the bias is unmistakable.

If he was a “watch captain,” did Zimmerman not have pepper spray?” I feel that this case, like police shootings, should be examined for appropriate use of force. As this situation unfolded, if Zimmerman escalated it by brandishing the weapon, then he should be held accountable. However, to jump to conclusions and demand instant arrest to pacify a large segment of the population denies the justice system’s opportunity to work as it is designed.

Jackson, Sharpton, et al ruined four college men at Duke over false charges from a stripper.
The race mongers never apologized for those ruined lives.

Now, Mr. Zimmerman has been expelled from his college because … well … just because.

He may not be able to attend classes anyway with the $10,000 bounty placed on his head by the New Black Panthers with their ‘dead or alive’ poster.

This is another incident where the President has “jumped in” before really having all of the facts of the incident. And why would he do that, just like he did with the incident when a Black professor was arrested which ended with the “beer” summit at the Whitehouse between the White police officer, the Black professor, and the President? In that case, the first reaction was assumed to be another “racial profiling” case but was later determined to have been handled properly and had nothing to do with race.

This latest incident may end up exactly the same way before it is resolved, and if so, it will just again show how the leaders in the Black community seem always look for any incident where they can exploit their continued and traditional premise that their lot in life is due to racial discrimination in this country.

Because we have essentially a “Black” President, this seems to have empowered the leaders in the Black community to take even more of an advantage of these opportunities and to actually “use” Obama to advance their motives.

Although I don’t usually agree with Jesse Jackson, his point is clear; VIOLENCE KILLS AND IS WRONG! Nancyj, the boy didn’t attack the fat slob called Zimmerman. The fat jerk shot HIM! Besides, IF the boy had attacked “Tubbo” Zimmerman, WHAT did he attack him with? Candy and tea? Your statement about Zimmerman being assaulted was wrong and in very bad taste

You really should check out the facts. The picture of Martin, for example, that the media has been using was taken when he was much younger (12 to 14 years of age). Martin is over 17 years old and a 6ft 3inch senior football player and he doesn’t look much like the media picture.

There was a witness that saw Martin on top of Zimmerman beating him up. Zimmerman suffered a broken nose and other injuries. My guess is that he fired his gun in self defense when Martin would not stop beating him, but we will have to wait and see the REAL facts of the matter.

What I, and others, have ignored in their remarks is Just why does the Federal Government even think that they have any business in this case. It is purely a local issue, and a stretch of the imagination to call it a Civil Rights issue. Especially since Holder, of Black Panthers infamy, has presumed to take jurisdiction. Is the ‘grand jury’ a Federal grand jury, or a State grand jury. Why are the local authorities removing themseves from this case? Is there coercion involved? Hello POTUS!

This is a CRIMINAL issue, and yes, belongs in the state, to be dealt with as a local CRIME. The feds have no business in this, and especially not to jump to conclusions before all the evidence is in. It violates every principle of the Rule of Law.

However, a more subtle and pernicious tactic is at work here, a favorite of tyrannical regimes… Obama, Holder and their ilk are always trying to turn every local or state issue unto a FEDERAL issue, to train/ indoctrinate peoples’ reactions to automatically focus on a NATIONAL solution to every problem. This is the same tactic Obama uses to circumvent Congress by aggregating power in the executive branch.

Little by little, the real power is removed from the people’s venue. You have to look at where the power is being concentrated ….. Always asking the simple question, “Does this leave the power at the level closest to me and my access to my local law enforcement, or does it remove the center of power to a higher level where I have no input or influence?”. If it moves it away, then beware.

The foundation is laid when local officials abdicate or surrender their power to those at a higher level, or get bought off, or threatened. It is further reinforced when the feds make the people feel like victims abandoned by their local officials, and the present themselves as the only all-powerful solution to the issue.

Folks, this is ALL calculated, planned, to undermine our local power and to enslave people from the top. We MUST educate the people we encounter anywhere, make them aware of how they are being manipulated, conned, used, lied to, treated like cattle…Because they aren’t going to see it on their own.

As Glenn Beck said, “Bottom up, top down, inside out”.

All these ‘wedge’ issues are playing right into the hands of Obummer and Texas Holdem’, but I sense an uptick in the emotional temperature. Add the Occupier’s to this mix and you’ve got a formula for serious mischief. If this potential volcano cannot be contained, it could be the pretext that BHO needs to go to the UN. Wasn’t it Leon “Pinheadda” that indicated UN permission for military intervention abroad? It’s not a big leap!

Zimmerman was the instigator of this tragedy. The police dispatcher told him to stay in his vehicle–a patrol car would be dispatched. The Neighborhood Watch handbook tells Watch members to contact the police and don’t get physically involved. Zimmerman did just the opposite.

How do you explain the injuries and the grass stains on Zimmerman? How do you explain a 17-year-old who was 6’2″ being portrayed in the media by showing a picture of a 12-year-old boy? Zimmerman, walking back to his vehicle, is the “instigator”? Bizarre.

Police dispatchers, can tell you to walk like a duck, and you know, some people would do just that, adding some quacking on their own. Dispatchers are trained to try to not give advice that might get them in trouble should all turn out badly.

Remember, when you are being beaten, robbed, raped, murdered, the Police are just 5 or 10 minutes away. In this case, Zimmerman was simply doing his crime ridden community a service, and asking someone, who or what, is not a crime.

The, Lets Get Physical, started with the battery of Zimmerman by the precious little 6’2″ or 3″, 180lbs, football player, gold toothed, gangsta like Cherub. Broken nose, bleeding head, grass stains on his back from his vicious pummeling, and yepsters, Zimmerman is the villain! Trayvon’s friends are now discovered cheering his beating of Zimmerman, on postings.

“The Tragedy” as you put it, is that Zimmerman, killed the wrong kind of assailant, the wrong kind of human. He is now in a Twilight Zone, of double standards. Had Zimmerman, kidnapped, Channon Christian & Chris Newsome, tortured them, killed them (google this crime), NO national attention would have been given to him.

The real villain, it seems, are FACTS! Facts that do not fit the correct POLITICAL RACE narrative, will be likely, ignored, twisted, and or, thrown down the memory hole if proven a lost opportunity.

Power is not exhibiting black racism and hate mongering which Jackson and Sharpton are well noted for. The revelation that the teen had been suspended for pot use on school grounds from his school indicates he was not the ‘angel’ the parents and black racist portray. Also that he attacked Mr. Zimmerman indicates the black arrogant hate he had in him and he could only learn that from his parents. So I’m turned off by the racism being exhibited and the Black Panthers issuing a “hit” which is illegal and the FBI and USJD need to shut that down immediately.

My basic observation is couldn’t Trevon Wliiams mother find a baby picture, like when he was an infant to post on line and on all of the signs and t-shirts, to portray him as a victim. The fact that Zimmer had a concussion and a broken nose, inflicted by a 6’2″ “victim” in most cases to use deadly force. How do you know they weren’t fighting over said gun? Too many inconsistencies and not enough facts to form an opinion but since when did facts matter to these “Poverty Pimps” and their ignorant followers? Since these people make their money off racial conflict, why not create the conflict just as the media has done on this. To hear these people as well as Shirley Jackson Lee and the entire Congressional Black Caucus want you to believe is that every white or Hispanic person in this country does nothing but figure out ways to discriminate against black people. to be honest with you before Obama came into office, it wasn’t even an issue. People had pretty much moved on. The Golden Rule applies here.

“He was shot while wearing a “hoodie” as he walked home on a rainy night in a gated community.”

    Not necessarily …

Listening to the tapes, the scene I get is Zimmerman attempted to follow Martin, but lost him in a ‘cut across through residential backyards. At that point he finished giving the 911 dispatcher directions and prepared to return to his truck … parked at the entrance to that ‘cut across’.

Having turned his back on the departed/no longer visible Martin, Zimmerman was jumped, thrown to the ground, and beaten among the back porches of the surrounding residences.

So, I would be more inclined to believe that, “He was shot while wearing a ‘hoodie’ as he assaulted a local resident, who happened to be legally armed.”
