Pentagon readies 16-month Iraq withdrawal plan

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pentagon officials say they are readying plans for a pullout of U.S. troops from Iraq, including a move to do it within the 16-month time frame promised by President-elect Barack Obama.

Department of Defense spokesman Geoff Morrell said Thursday that military planners are at work on a range of options for a drawdown in the Iraq conflict. He said those options include a speedier withdrawal that would be completed within the 16-month deadline Obama committed to during the presidential campaign. Morrell says Obama has not asked for any plans yet.

During the campaign, Obama said he would call the Joint Chiefs of Staff together during his first day in office to set in motion plans to end the Iraq war. Morrell says there is no meeting yet scheduled.
