Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., who pledged he would not serve more than two full terms is keeping his word and stepping down in 2010. His state, however, has not elected a Democratic senator in decades. Also possibly retiring is Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, whose term ends in 2012. She is expected to step down next year to run for governor.
"The Senate has been in session for three days and we've already seen three significant retirements or recruitment failures: Mel Martinez and Kit Bond. Jeb Bush took a hard look at Florida and decided to pass. It's like the rats are jumping off the ship before it decided to leave the port," said Matt Miller, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
A Republican consultant in Missouri, John Hancock, said nothing has changed for the party's state or national political landscape.
"The Missouri Senate race in 2010 as of yesterday was going to be a hotly contested and highly targeted race and nothing has changed in that regard," Hancock said.
