COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio's inspector general is investigating why state computers were used to find personal information on "Joe the Plumber."
Investigators are trying to determine whether computer systems were illegally accessed to retrieve information about Toledo-area plumber Joe Wurzelbacher (wur-zuhl-BAHK'-ur).
Helen Jones-Kelly, state Department of Job and Family Services director, says she approved a check after the Oct. 15 presidential debate to see whether Wurzelbacher was current on child support payments. She says there were no political reasons behind the decision.
Republican John McCain repeatedly cited Wurzelbacher's concerns over Democrat Barack Obama's tax proposals in that debate.
