Northern Command was set up in 2002, in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, to oversee homeland defense. Both are located in Colorado Springs. In other comments, Renuart downplayed the recent increase in flyovers of Russian bombers, largely in the Pacific. He said Russia has been very forthcoming about the flights, although the timing and flight path details may not always be provided. The increased activity, he said, is largely due to the fact that Russia can afford the extra military investment and training. But while the flights have not been threatening, Renuart said the key concern is airspace safety when the flyovers occur with little notice. In February, Russian bombers flew over a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Pacific, prompting the U.S. to scramble fighters to escort the Russian aircraft.
