"Sometimes it's difficult to know what a politician will actually do once in office because they say different things, at different times, to different people," McCain said in Cocoa Beach, standing beside Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida and Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. "This is a particular problem when a candidate has a short, thin record on the issue, as is the case of Sen. Obama."
McCain and Obama remain in a tight race in Florida, despite Obama spending millions of dollars on television advertising.
After his Florida appearances, McCain flew to Atlanta where he raised more than $1.75 million for Republicans at a fundraiser clouded by confusion over the role of Ralph Reed, the former Christian Coalition executive director now linked to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. McCain led an investigation into Abramoff's dealings with Indian tribes when he was chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
Abramoff ultimately went to prison for conspiracy, mail fraud and tax evasion; Reed's association with the former lobbyist contributed to his failure in 2006 to become the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Georgia.
