Draft Iran sanctions considered
By UPI Staff

UNITED NATIONS (UPI) -- The permanent members of the U.N. Security Council have reportedly agreed on proposed sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the permanent member countries -- the United States, Britain, Russia, France and China -- plus Germany planned to present the proposal to the Security Council's 10 other members Thursday.

The proposed sanctions included a call to governments to freeze grants and loans to Iran except for humanitarian purposes and a ban on arms imports and exports of Iranian arms, the Times said. The sanctions would expand the list of individuals and organizations considered to be linked to Iran's nuclear program and, thus, have their assets frozen.

The draft of the proposed sanctions said the sanctions would be lifted if Iran cease enriching uranium. Iran has said its nuclear program is for energy production, although other countries suspect it is for weapons production.
