NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes closed mixed Friday, with unemployment up and fewer jobs added than expected, but factory orders having their best showing since March.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 20.19 or 0.16 percent to close at 12,653.49. The broader Standard and Poor's 500 stock index added 2.45 or 0.17 percent to 1,448.39.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,927 stocks advanced and 1,368 declined on volume of 2.63 billion shares.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was up 7.50 or 0.30 percent to 2,475.88.

The U.S. Labor Department said Friday the January unemployment rate rose to 4.6 percent from 4.5 percent in December. Non-farm payrolls increased 111,000, below Wall Street expectations of 150,000.

U.S. factory orders grew 2.4 percent, the most in nine months, the Commerce Department said.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 stock index climbed 27.61 or 0.2 percent to close at 17,547.11, its highest level since April 7.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 2/32, or 63 cents per $1,000 invested, to yield 4.83 percent. The 30-year bond was up 6/32, yielding 4.92 percent.

The U.S. dollar was at 121.04 yen from 120.71 yen at Thursday's close. The euro was at $1.2967 from $1.3020 late Thursday.
