Specter thinks Rove e-mails can be found

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter said Sunday he thinks there's "good reason to believe" the White House can find the missing Karl Rove e-mail messages.

The Pennsylvania Republican told ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos that he and Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., recommended to White House Counsel Fred Fielding that more should be done to find the four years of e-mails from political strategist Karl Rove.

"And there's good reason to believe that they can be found if we look hard enough," Specter said. "Leahy and I suggested that there be an outside expert brought into the matter."

Specter said Fielding responded that he thought it was "a good idea" and "they have nothing to hide." Specter added he was looking forward to a Monday meeting with Fielding and Leahy to "get this matter moving forward to find out what the facts are so that we can figure out whether anything wrong was done."

Leahy was much more vehement earlier in contending the e-mails still exist. "It's like the famous 18-minute gap of the Nixon White House tapes," Leahy said. "They say they've been erased or misplaced; they're there. They know they're there."
