Clinton asks reporters to check for scars

NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton joked about her Republican opponent's remarks claiming she had cosmetic surgery, asking reporters to look for the scars.

The Democratic senator's comments about her looks came after the New York Daily News reported that 59-year-old John Spencer suggested Clinton underwent plastic surgery, saying she used to be less attractive compared to how she looks now, the newspaper said Tuesday.

Clinton turns 59 on Thursday.

Spencer denied making the comments, suggesting that the reporter wanted to derail his campaign and owed Clinton an apology for publishing the comments, the Daily News said. Polls show Spencer trailing Clinton by 37 points, the newspaper said.

Asked about Spencer's comments, Clinton said, "I thought my high school picture was cute," said the Daily News, which ran a high school photo of Clinton with the story.

After a campaign stop, Clinton asked reporters, 'Do you want to check for the scars?"

On a more serious note, Clinton said Spencer's campaign turned to making "false accusations about appearance" rather than discuss issues. The Daily News said it stands by its reporting.
