Protestors at HHS chief's home

WASHINGTON -- Hundreds of protesters descended on U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt's doorstep, objecting to the Medicare prescription drug plan.

National People's Action, based in Chicago, spearheaded the Sunday protest, urging extension of the May 15 deadline for signing up for Medicare Part D prescription coverage, The Washington Post said.

One protester knocked on the door of Leavitt's Arlington County home Arlington police showed up and moved the crowd away from the front door.

HHS spokesman Bill Hall said Leavitt was out of town.

"He has said before that he opposes extending the May 15 deadline," Hall said.

Protestors want the deadline extended to Dec. 31.
