“The View” studio and TV audiences are privy to plenty of passionate disagreements, but rarely do the arguments carry over to the backstage. That was the case Thursday after guest Judge Jeanine Pirro accused co-host Whoopi Goldberg of having a “Trump derangement syndrome.”
“Did you just point at me?” asked Goldberg, who then lost her cool and fired back at the host of Fox’s “Justice with Judge Jeanine.” The two went back and forth until Goldberg went to a commercial break and dismissed Pirro by saying, “Say goodbye. Bye. I’m done.”
But that wasn’t the end of the confrontation. Goldberg reportedly left the stage during the break and ran into Pirro backstage, and their shouting match escalated.
“Jeanine could have walked by her. There was one more segment to do,” a source told Page Six. “She could have walked by her easily, she put her finger in her face and said, ‘I’ve done more for abused women than you will ever do’ and that’s when Whoopi said, ‘You and I have never had a problem,’ before everything else was said.”
Another source gave a similar account: “Jeanine tried telling her she’s fought for victims her whole life. … Whoopi got in her face and said that they’ve known each other a long time, but still, ‘(Expletive) you, get the (expletive) out of this building.’ Jeanine looked stunned.”
Goldberg and ABC, according to Page Six, have since reached out to Pirro to discuss what happened.
When the show returned from the commercial break, Goldberg apologized to the audience. “So you saw me do something I very rarely do. I very rarely lose my cool, and I’m not proud of it. I don’t like it. But I also don’t like being accused of being hysterical because that is one of the things I try not to be on this show.”
Things were already testy even before Pirro came out for her segment. A staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, Pirro was reportedly upset that she wasn’t told until the last-minute that anti-Trump Republican and CNN contributor Ana Navarro was sitting in as a guest host.
“When Jeanine arrived on set she was looking for a fight and refusing to be on with Ana, demanding (Ana) not be in the segment,” a source told Page Six.”(Pirro) was yelling at the executive producer and her staff like, ‘You need to handle this.'”
A different source said, “Ana is 24-7 anti-Trump. Jeanine wasn’t yelling, but you could tell they felt like the segment was being hijacked by shoving in an anti-Fox, anti-Trump person.”
Pirro was promoting her book “Liars, Leakers and Liberals” but found herself defending Trump against the mostly liberal panel during her interview. When she made her “Trump derangement syndrome” statement, Goldberg became visibly incensed.
“Listen, I don’t have Trump derangement,” she replied to a still-smiling Pirro. Let me tell you what I have. … I’m 62 years old, there have been a lot of people in office that I didn’t agree with, but I have never ever seen anything like this. I’ve never seen anybody whip up such hate. I’ve never seen anybody be so dismissive.”
