Sheriff urges residents to arm themselves with guns

By The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

In his latest radio spot, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. tells residents personal safety isn't a spectator sport anymore, and "I need you in the game."

"With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option," Clarke intones.

"You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back."

Clarke urges listeners to take a firearm safety course and handle a firearm "so you can defend yourself until we get there."

"You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We're partners now. Can I count on you?"

He’s absolutely right, of course. An armed homeowner (having taken a safety course) is the best deterent against crime.

I agree 100%. The local Police cannot handle all of the calls they receive in a timely manner because they are short staffed and rely on Volunteer Assistance to help get them through. This is not just occurring here and in Wisconsin it is nation wide.

And the very good sheriff should have added what the Second Amendment was about in the first place. Securing a FREE State. That means standing firm enough to any tyrannical powers of any government.

The “violent crime”, that is happening at this very moment is one to our LIBERTY. Just where is the GOP? The 911 call is being called….

While SAFETY is a very important concern, it is not a requirement for exercising your second amendment right to keep and bear arms as the founders and Constitution ratification delegates wanted and expected all citizens to be armed with exceptions allowed for infirmity, age, or religious convictions.

Training this militia (which consists of ALL OF US!) was and remains a STATE responsibility as stated in Article I Section 8 of the Constitution “reserving to the states respectively, the appointment of the officers, and the authority of training the militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;” – a responsibility States have been lax on excepting for the ORGANIZED Militia which is the National Guard. ALL of us are a part of the UNORGANIZED MILITIA and should be armed and interestingly as a state official Sheriff Clarke has the power and is simply calling forth local members of the militia to assist him as the founders intended.

In one of the founders own words on the subject — “As to the protection of our own frontiers, it would seem best to leave it to the people themselves, as hath ever been the case, and if at any time the frontier men should be too hard pressed, they may be assisted by the midland militia. This will always secure to us a hardy set of men on the frontiers, used to arms, and ready to assist against invasions on other parts. Whereas, if they are protected by regulars, security will necessarily produce inattention to arms, and the whole of our people becoming disused to War, render the Curse of a standing army Necessary. In this light the Indians may be considered as a useful people, as it is surely fortunate for a free community to be under some necessity of keeping the whole body acquainted with the use of Arms.” The Letters of Richard Henry Lee – Richard Henry Lee to James Monroe 5 Jan. 1784 Letters 2:287–88

This same man prophetically warned on one of the BIG DANGERS of a Standing Army (which includes the National Guard and Reserves) with these words — “These corps, not much unlike regular troops, will ever produce an inattention to the general militia; and the consequence has ever been, and always must be, that the substantial men, having families and property, will generally be without arms, without knowing the use of them, and defenceless; whereas, to preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them; nor does it follow from this, that all promiscuously must go into actual service on every occasion. The mind that aims at a select militia, must be influenced by a truly anti-republican principle; and when we see many men disposed to practice upon it, whenever they can prevail, no wonder true republicans are for carefully guarding against it. As a farther check, it may be proper to add, that the militia of any state shall not remain in the service of the union, beyond a given period, without the express consent of the state legislature.” — Richard Henry Lee, of Virginia, in Additional Letters From The Federal Farmer, 25 Jan. 1788

Joe Biden was correct about one thing he has said as the nation’s VP. The best home defense weapon is a shotgun. I mostly agree with his statement, except you should not settle for the two shot double barrel one that he mentioned. I would recommend the Remington Model 870 Home Defense 12 Gage pump action, loaded with 00 buckshot. The 870 has been the most widely used shotgun by the military and police for decades because it is always reliable and very effective at close range (within 25 yards). You simply don’t need a 100 yard kill zone inside your home, unless of course you live in a 10,000 Sq. Ft. mansion like Al Gore with acres of land separating you from your neighbors. Over penetration of rounds is a major concern and liability factor for most homeowners and apartment residents when using a rifle or pistol for home defense. Keep your AR’s, AK’s and 9 Mills for fun at the range.

The Little Missus and a 12 gauge? Humm?

We “Subjects” should take a hint from His Majesty’s Government buying millions and millions of hollow point rounds. Those are NOT made with the usual use of practice range shooting. The US Marines are ditching the 9′s and going back to the .45. Hollow point those bad bad boys, you The People.

Have not read about many major events with over penetration, well, except in gang war zones like Chicago… but I have read about The Police spraying bullets, you know, the experts, going into the wrong homes… The case of shot up pedestrians recently in greatly de-gunned civilian (subjects) New York City is a shining standout. Best watch out Lord Cuomo from your NYC Finest.

And per old Joe, not Joseph Stalin, the smiling Joker, his “home security” is not a shotgun, just dozens of agents armed with short .30 rifle rounds, handguns… It is nice to be Vice King.

LOL, Al Gort and his estate mansion.

      librabob –

Actually #4 buckshot is a better defense load than 00 if you can find it. Slightly larger pattern at close ranges with more impacts and even less OVER PENETRATION (as in walls – the “target” actually aimed at gets to experience more than adequate penetration!). Within a room BB shot is also pretty darned effective.

      edodaniel;

Thanks for the advice. I’ll check the pattern spread with the #4 v.00 next time at the range. That’s also another big plus for the 12 gauge, so many options for types of ammunition, all tailored to your specific needs and your ability to withstand the punishing recoil one expects with this type of weapon.

      lwesson,

My wife does fine with a 12ga., 18″ barrel, extended tube, old High Standard pump as well as an M1A which she prefers to a Mini-14. Don’t sell the gals short as she also prefers a 1911 .45 to a Glock 26 9mm.

As vicious as chicks are, I’m always surprised that they’d even think of using a firearm instead of the built in fangs and claws when they go all Medusa harpy in defense of their loved ones. (Don’t get insulted ladies, that’s meant with the most humble respect and admiration and awe.)

nhpollack: You have me crying laughing! Missus likes her .45 S&W or my Colt Peacemaker .45. She is pretty darn good. Upon my advice, as we could just pick one for her, she went .45 Auto. I keep my Colt Peacemaker ready and use it in Bear & Cat country. (Yes I want something more bear worthy)

She would go all Medusa alright! We had charming intruders in our back yard at 7:30 AM Thanksgiving morning. In short, THEY were in some kind of shock at her yelling at them as I went running to the back through the house at light speed. Never have seen that side of her! I was in AWE! Thankfully we have had NO return. Officer brother in law, said they were casing the place thinking that no one would be home.

When I leave, I feel much better about her being NOT kind of alone.

      Cheers!

      edodaniel,
Interesting that you mention the #4 as I read about that in a book by Mel Tappen about 30 years ago. I think anything coming out of a 12ga. at 12-25′ is going to be discouraging. One thing I don’t see much about is the noise in an enclosed space. It’s definitely going to mess with your hearing and I don’t see grabbing the shotgun, flashlight and earplugs when you hear something going bump in the night. Obviously, it’s better to be hearing impaired and alive, but I’m just saying. Same goes for a .357 or .45.

The chief advantage to an M4 type AR15 for home defense is it’s short overall length (<30"), no recoil, and auto chambering of the next round (semi-auto).

An 870 Tactical at 38" long is much more difficult to swing in close quarters, the recoil may be excessive for a woman, and the need to physically rack each round could be a killer for an inexperienced person in a gunfight with intruders.

My personal choice for home protection is a Saiga 12 semi-auto with a bullpup stock (27.5" overall) with two 10 round mags taped together, firing #4 buck with spreader wads behind flattened pellets (~36" spread at 20'). Very effective, but not for everybody. My daughter who shoots Highpower comp finds the recoil very uncomfortable.

Of course Diane Frankenstein wants to ban my Saiga.

      lwesson,

My first experience with that side of the dear, frail thing was showing up for an appointment at a gallery. The young gal behind the counter told us that the owner wasn’t there and, being full of herself, got a bit snooty. My wife, believing she was showing me and my work a high degree of disrespect got “that look”; flushed cheeks, flared nostrils, slitty eyes and those two images in the rangefinder were almost lined up. I said in a calm voice, “It’s okay, let’s go”, but the low growl in her throat prevented her from hearing, so I gently put a hand on her slightly vibrating arm and again said, in what I hoped was a gentle, yet firm voice, “Okay, let’s go NOW”. No response. She wanted some of that. Hell, she wanted all of that and then wanted to drag the carcass around and eat it. I had to use secret Oriental advanced soft form body dynamics to get her off point and out the door.

I don’t know if you like living dangerously, but sometimes it’s fun to push their buttons to get them almost to that point because they look so hot when they’re pissed. As I’m sure you know, it’s not a game for the faint hearted, inexperienced, or those with slow reflexes.

I sure hope there’s a heaven and I get to go there so I can thank God for creating women in her image.

She likes to shoot the 1911 and I’d gotten her a Glock 26 as well as a Ruger LCP to slip into her garter when she got her CCW, but she has difficulty racking the slide and doesn’t feel one with the technology so she goes with an old S&W Airweight Bodyguard and a Model 19 by her side of the bed.

We have a big old bear around here who occasionally ghetto walks through the property like he owns the place, but has never tried the doors or windows. Unless one were to put it right in his ear, I don’t think a .45LC would impress him too much. I just had a conversation with a former neighbor who told me she was driving home a couple of years ago and he was taking up a whole lane of the road. She was going about 15 or 20 and accidentally clipped him going by. He didn’t even look over at her. I nicknamed him Sonny.

      Desiccant in your ammo cans.

I needed to laugh this morning till I was crying! Thanks.

When I felt sure 2 years ago that I was going to Alaska, I found a .50 S&W short with nice compensators, used, very slightly. (think I know why) Hesitation was bad on my part, it was snapped up the next day. A friend in Alaska last year sent a far too inquisitive, smarter than the average Bear, Yogi the Grizzly, to Bear Valhalla with his .44 S&W. Made his day! (my friend that is) My romps so far recently, have been in Black Bear country. Now the Mountain Lions, sheeesh! One tracked me 8 miles back to the cabin! Sneaky, wicked kitties with long nasty claws and teeth!

Off to S.D. with the LC Peacemaker… unfortunately.

Interesting that other law enforcement agencies in the Sheriff’s city were less than happy to hear his admonitions.
It does them no benefit for the Sheriff to assert a fact that has ALWAYS been true, which is …

The individual has ALWAYS been responsible for his own defense until law enforcement personnel arrive, and they almost NEVER get there in time to save your life.

If I were a citizen of Milwaukee County I’d be proud to have him as my sheriff. He understands that when seconds count the cops are only minutes away. Moreover, he knows that when someone responsible knows how to use a gun and does so they will be able to defend themselves.
