Obama vs. Romney at the Alfred E. Smith dinner. Who was funnier?

By Kay Daly

In New York City, the two presidential candidates met again, yet this time, it was in good fun.....or was it?

The Alfred E. Smith dinner is a traditional stop for Presidents and presidential candidates on the road to the White House, and last night, it had both. They had their speech writers busy, no doubt, because a good comedic speech is tough to both write and deliver.

I'll try to put in my two cents as fairly as I can.

The President can give a speech....no doubt about it. There were some laugh out loud moments in this comedy bit. No doubt, he is the cool kid in the room and he knows it. So the self-deprecating lines somehow don't connect. Can't get around that arrogance. And some of his lines? Aren't that funny. They seem as tired as he did in the first debate! (Cue drum riff, laugh track.)

Mitt Romney gets an unfair rap as some kind of stiff rich guy who has no sense of humor. Speeches can be written, as both of these were for these gentlemen....but it takes an impeccable sense of delivery to really make a comedic bit come alive. It ain't easy, and frankly, I was not at all prepared for the speech that Mitt Romney gave last night. Line after line was hilarious. Beautifully delivered and fabulously timed.

So, who do YOU think pulled it off? Obama? Or Romney?

I watched this live last night .. and had to record it and watch it again, as I was laughing so much I would miss the next line. I enjoyed both of them. BUT, I can tell you, Romney pulled it off better than Obama .. and you can tell this because if you do a search, some of the liberal sites who posted it berated Romney because they thought he took cheap shots at Obama (one way to gauge who pulled it off best is by measuring who got upset most.)

I loved Obama’s line about Bloomburg only “allowing him to have 16oz” .. but I have to say, the rhetoric trying to paint Romney as stiff and out of touch just keeps falling apart (and this did a lot more toward killing that case.) I felt Obama was overall a little stiff and flat at times, but I did not see that in Romney (again, though I did laugh at both .. just harder and more at Romney overall.)

Exactly. I really enjoyed Romneys fun.He had a spark he doesnt show often enough.I think he is well on his way. With the partnership of Paul Ryan and the class of his first lady Ann, he will be remarkable president. Two drop dead gorgeous couples in the WH on te side of the people it doesnt get any better than that.I dont mean looks matter in the leaast bit,but the class tells and overseas must see it.

I also hit the record button during Romney’s speech. I knew Libs would be screaming foul because it was too true as well as funny. I especially liked the Sesame Street line (letter O and # 16 Trillion). Weakest was Mitt/Ann comparison to Obama/Clinton. Obama’s speech was mostly a snooze fest, with his best just slightly better than Mitt’s weakest. That’s my honest appraisal. But even if Obama was the funniest, and Mitt bombed, Mitt would get my vote. We don’t need a funny president, we need a competent president.

My favorite Romney line was “brought to you by the letter “O” and the number 16 trillion!” BHO looked like a reluctant and defeated participant!

There was no comparison! Romney stole the show, got more laughs and more enthusiastic applause. I watched it live and when the camera cut to Obama during Romney’s speech Obama looked so angry that it made me laugh all the more.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Just about everything Romney said had more than an ounce of truth and the comments were real zingers. The statement about having Bill to lean on really would have set him off. BO has been dependent on Bill and Hillary to pull him out of trouble constantly.

For people to be really laughing at BO was embarrassing and infuriating for him, I would think. For four years, he has been able to make fun of others with no consequences. All of a sudden, he is the joke. It probably had something to do with his poor performance.

Also, loved Anne Ronmey’s attire. And by the by, where was old horse face?

Yes he did! Romney was stunning!

I encourage you and everyone else to pray Psalm 109:8 right up to Nov. 6th. It reads:

“Let his days be few and let another take his office.”

By the way, WHO is “old horse face?”

Mitt Romney is a class act as he delivered his well written speech flawlessly and he was much better then the President. Ann Romney looked beautiful and together, when they move into the Whitehouse, they will bring back a JFK like aura as the first family.

I thought I was watching the reincarnation of Bob Hope when Romney was telling his funnies..Well not quite but He had the style and timing and overall stature, especially for somebody that’s supposed to be a stick in the mud.Rock On Mitt!

Romney was the funniest by far! I laughed out loud every time he said the punch line. Speaking of punches, that’s what o looked like every time…notice his ‘cover’ by sipping that cup of coffee?? And, yes, I also am questioning..where was Michelle? I think she’s fed up with o…just thinking out loud. BTW, Ann Romney was stunning!

More like a “Political Roast.” They came across as contenders yet human beings. Romney was the funnier of the two because of his timing. Red Skelton once said that anyone could present comedy as long as they remembered “the timing.” The element of surprise for the punch line. Obama was good, no doubt about it but he has always had an infectious smile. Mitt was more relaxed than I have seen him so this is a differnt side of the man who will become the next President of the United States. This ‘roast’ helped to round out this man of great integrity, humility and know how. (the two had notes in front of them and no one was interrupting them so that made a huge difference.)

Romney was great, Obama so so, not as funny, almost like he knows the game is over and he will not be reelected. His ability to bamboozle people that he is such a nice friendly guy didn’t come across. Loved seeing it again.

Romney’s jokes and delivery reminded me of Reagan when he delivered his jokes…. well written, well timed….and most of all, funny, not mean.

But what really sealed it was the ending that Romney delivered. His choice of words, his composition – showed his kindness, humanity, humility and great character. It was so elegant and so well spoken, it moved me. It definitely sets him apart from Obama and most world leaders, past and present.

There is no doubt that Romney, once again, showed his class and certainly surprised a lot of people with his “performance”. His final line about Sesame Street took him right to the top.
As usual,Obama was his smug, obnoxious self.

Romney won by a MILE! It was all BHO could do to keep from grimacing…that’s why he was constantly sipping the coffee. He KNEW every zinger Romney let fly was on target…funny but ACCURATE!

And yes, Ann Romney looked every bit like the elegant first lady America deserves. I’m quite sure it won’t be the first time she will have been proud of her country when she stands by her husband as he takes the oath of office…and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have absolutely NO doubt that he will HONOR THAT OATH each and every day he is in office!
