Joe trades wrench for reporter's notepad in Israel

SDEROT, Israel (AP) -- Joe the Plumber has set aside his wrenches to become a rookie war correspondent, covering Israel's side of its two-week-old military offensive in Gaza.

The Ohio man, who rocketed to fame during the U.S. presidential campaign for asking Barack Obama about his tax plan, was in the southern Israeli town of Sderot on Sunday to tell readers of the conservative pjtv.com Web site about the rockets that rain down from the neighboring Gaza Strip.

The people of Sderot "can't do normal things day to day" like get soap in their eyes in the shower, for fear of rockets, said America's most famous plumber, whose real name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher.

"I'm sure they're taking quick showers," he said. "I know I would."

Pajamas TV is turning Joe the Plumber into a journalist, and the media class doesn’t like it one bit.

Joe Wurzelbacher is in Israel with a television crew in tow to talk to Israeli civilians about the war with Hamas in Gaza, and quite a few journalists — including the author of this media blog — seem personally offended that an out-of-work plumber who was recently the focus of their snarky asides might soon be counted as a peer.

On the surface, their complaint seems to be that that being a war correspondent — among the most glamorous and dangerous of media assignments — requires a specialized journalism background.

I love it! "Journalists" always seem to have their noses in the air.

Joe may need "tv coaching," having a live camera pointed at you is scary, but I think he's gonna, with Michael Yon and others, set the world of journalism on it's collective ears.
