Segel: A Nightmare Called Edgewood

"I made this trip fifty years after the fact to squarely face my devils".... "I finally came to the realization that it was not the place, but the people at that place who had changed many of us forever. We were the victims and became the walking wounded casualties of the Cold War who can never be made whole again...."

These are the words of Eric Muth, one of 7,120 soldiers and airmen who were subjected to secret chemical weapons and drug tests at the Edgewood Arsenal, northeast of Baltimore, Maryland. His journey back to that site was made in an attempt to gain some grain of understanding concerning his battle with the United States government to obtain assistance and compassion for those thousands of young men whose lives were permanently damaged by CIA and military human experimentation.

qrayjack, this is one of many times the military were used as guinea pigs. There were several other chemical tests along with subjecting some with doses of radiation at atomic bomb tests. I expect the ones that authorized the tests were advised by the scientist and CIA that the tests would be harmless - and they believed them.

I knew of the a-tests but had never heard of this. Bad. Very bad.

I must be older than either of you guys: I've heard about several of these kinds of tests (although not this one). My question is: what have we NOT heard about.........yet?

Is there anything we can do to help these brave men?

When stationed at Ft. Knox, KY, after returning from Vietnam, I remember being asked if any of us wanted to participate in some testing that could involve medical experiments. The only ones interested were those who had done some prior experimenting on themselves, with illegal substances. I guess they figured they could get some free drugs out of it because that is what was being quietly discussed among the other GIs. Fastforward to today and I have a friend who is retired from Edgewood Arsenal, where he worked, as a civilian, building systems for handling toxic substances and equipping bombs and artillery munitions for the dispersal of nerve agents. I'll ask him if he ran into anyone who related stories of what was happening in the human testing department.
