Report: Obama to Offer Israel 'Nuclear Umbrella' Against Iran

President-elect Barack Obama will offer Israel a strategic pact designed to fend off any nuclear attack on the Jewish state by Iran, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday.

Haaretz, quoting an unnamed source, said the Obama administration would pledge under the proposed "nuclear umbrella" to respond to any Iranian strike on Israel with a "devastating U.S. nuclear response."

Granting Israel a nuclear guarantee would essentially suggest the U.S. is willing to come to terms with a nuclear Iran, the paper reported.

According to the paper's source, Obama's nuclear guarantee would be backed by a new and improved Israeli anti-ballistic missile system. The Bush administration took the first step by deploying an early-warning radar system, which enhances the ability to detect Iranian ballistic missiles.

It's interesting that, true to form, a liberal Chief Executive promises what amounts to U.S. military protection while a liberal member of congress, Rep John Murtha, is promoting a reduction in defense spending citing both new weapons and personnel costs. Somehow the cost in lives resulting from a down sized military of pre WWII, pre Korean conflict, pre Vietnam and pre Iraq 2 doesn't register with liberal politicians.

There are other issues of "allowing" a nuclear Iran. What about the fact that Iran has shown such willingness to use other states and non-state actors to stir up the world? If they get the bomb, they will be providing it to the PLO and HAMAS like they are their missiles, mortors and ammunition, and using them for "plausible deniability". We can't let this wacko regime get the bomb or even get close. They have proven their willingness to support terrorism by other actors and their own irrational international policies. We must stop them or allow/assist Isreal in stopping them.

It is my understanding that the US has already sold Israel many bunker buster missiles that will pentrate further than before.

I think Israel will use these to knock out Iran's capability to produce nukes avoiding nuclear exchange and contamination on both sides in the future.

I cannot believe this is quotely correctly.

The point is:

If Iran is willing to wipe out Israel, then they will go beyond that.

A US response will knock out all of Iran's capabilities of going further and attacking others.

none of these quotes much matter. hussein has already stated several times before that he will pull our fangs "to give the world a more peaceful impression of the u.s.!!"

he won't allow any more weapons to be manufactured, he will destroy most of our existing weaponry, he won't allow weapons that are nearing completion to be tested before destroying them.

so it doesn't really matter, he has already said he was going to throw israel under the bus on several occasions. and then WE won't even be able to stop iran AFTER they give the weapons to hamas etc. and israel is destroyed. it won't matter whether iran has kept enough to attack other countries or not, we will be powerless to do anything about it!!

I know I read somewhere that Hussein stated emphatically that he wanted the whole world nuclear-free and would start with unilaterally disarming the US to prove his point. Now he says he will protect Israel with a nuclear shield? What gives? Which is the lie? If I was Israel I would be looking for my own protection and not be depending on the undependable known liar Hussein. I believe he is such a pacifist like Chamberlin before WWII that he would sacrifice Israel rather than provoke the world into a nuclear war. In any case, the future of this world in which we will be living after Hussein takes office will be very, very scary no matter how you look at it.
