Default What course for McCain, now back in the Senate?

By LAURIE KELLMAN
Associated Press
November 17, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) -- His hopes for the presidency dashed yet again, John McCain returns to the Senate as the Republican iconoclast his GOP colleagues find hard to embrace and one his Democratic peers would love to win over.

Hard feelings aside, the four-term Arizona senator still stands as an effective lawmaker -- and critical vote -- whom both parties will pursue.

McCain headed a GOP ticket that suffered significant down-ballot defeats in both the Senate and House. Shaken Republicans facing a bigger Democratic majority are welcoming McCain with what passes for warmth, collegiality and compliments.

"I think it is indisputable that he is our best-known and most prominent senator," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said in a telephone interview last week.

McCain wore me out this year, I wantd him to do and say so many things and he didn't. I expect he will kiss up to Barak and be loyal like my dog is as long as someone will rub his belly and tell him he is a good boy. He is not a conservative, he is a wuss as far as that is concerned. I wish he would leave Washington with Bush at least I would know where he stood then.

McCain just could not articulate his program nor articulate the problems with Obama's agenda. I voted for McCain but he is almost as much Democrat as Republican.

This man has seriously damaged the GOP and conservative causes. He should be relegated to the back benches and whenever he speaks to his constituents - NY Times, Washington Post, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc - he should be ignored and dismissed by his colleagues in the GOP.

The Dems may indeed try to coopt him again but he should find no willing accomplices in the GOP ranks. He's settled comfortably into the country club collegiality of the Senate and needs to be scolded and shunned.
