Default Dear Congress: Put The Gun Down Now

By Michelle Malkin
October 3, 2008

Will 2008 be the year of the Chicken Little Congress? Or can the House of Representatives show the panic-driven Senate what it really means to be a deliberative body?

On Sept. 19, Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson put a gun to America's head: Pass his $700 billion bailout of the banking industry and give him unfettered new powers to buy up an ocean of privately held toxic assets, or all hell would break loose. Treasury officials warned that the market would lose a third of its value if the bill were not passed immediately.

"We could see falls of 3,000 or 4,000 points on the Dow," a Republican official heaved. "We may not have another day," Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hyperventilated. "We can't afford to do nothing," echoed all the other Democratic Henny Pennys and Republican Goosey Looseys in Paulson's sway. It's a "crap sandwich," House GOP leader John Boehner sighed, but the costs of inaction would be worse.

I hope and pray that the financial crisis is not as bad as has been portrayed by some. But, I'm not sure I want to roll the dice either.

My bank have already tightened their credit, and I'm sure other banks have also. They are not going to throw good money after bad.

When credit is tight, new small businesses do not start and existing small businesses suffer or go under. This means people lose their jobs.

How serious is the crisis? That depends on whom you listen to.

This is undoubtedly the worst financial mess I have seen in my lifetime. Seventy two years makes that quite an admission.

I am still wondering how much is real and how much is fear mongering. How do we trust government to fix something they mucked up mostly all by themselves. It's a noble wish that all Americans have a home of their own but I don't really believe that includes people buying 400K homes on 60K annual incomes..........get real!

The House was right to take it slow........these pleas for speed in passing bailout legislation remind me of high pressure salesmen pressing buyers with "You have to decide today, otherwise the deal will probably not be available tomorrow". Then we got the reaction of the Senate.....full fledged headlong dive into the bailout and adding all kinds of PORK in the process. One of my senators from Oregon even managed to stuff his little contribution in there. Wooden arrow manufacturing got a hunk of money! Paying off a campaign contributor Senator Wyden? He actually put in too servings of pork but the arrow giveaway was truly disgusting. I hope the House teaches these dimwits a bit of a lesson on what the average American does and does not want!

How unfortunate for John McCain and Republicans in general this financial mess emerged just weeks away from the election. I wail in frustration that McCain refuses to take advantage, unwilling or unable to turn any of this to his benefit - disclose what really happened at the White House meeting, point fingers, name names... coincidence? I think not! Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson is an extremely partisen Democrat.

Totally agree with you Dingbat 36. Too much pork..hey wasn't this bill a RESULT of all the pork spending, in addition to the mortgage mess? Anyways, I think McCain would have done himself a favor by voting AGAINST this as the majority of Americans wanted, and I think this is going to be a "make or break" in regards to the election unfortunately. 4 years from now..David Limbaugh and Michelle Malkin on the ticket..wouldn't that be fantastic!

I don't think that's just coincidence. Think about it.
Paulson is a partisan dumdem. Paulson used to be with Goldman-Sachs. Goldman-Sachs is a hefty contributor to the Obama campaign. Obama went to the White House that particular evening with an email in his hot little hand, of Goldman-Sachs talking points. And the O is now reassuring us that he is in daily contact with Paulson. How reassuring.
Meanwhile, Fanny and Freddie own the dumdems thru campaign contributions, and got them to refuse all oversight of brewing trouble.
They were able to keep the plug in the volcano 'til just before the election, then gleefully pulled the plug and screamed "Bush did it!" and of course all the sheeple are going
Shout it from the housetops!!! :megaphone:

Angry Re: Dear Congress: Put The Gun Down Now

I think this whole mess was invented by a few people and obama was one of them. He talked to Paulsen and got this mess started, and from now on we do not have a chance of a snowball in hell of winning this election, and the dumbocrats will win everything including a veto margin in both houses. They played their cards correctly, and all the republicans swallowed it hook line and sinker. We don't have any conservatives in washington, except the ones that voted against this monstrosity, and I can't believe Bush fell for this crap. He has people advising him, and I don't believe they encouraged him to sign this give away bill.Boy, we even got money in there to build a race track somewhere, and if that doesn't tell you something,, I have some riverfront property for sail in Arizona.
