Obama Losing Traction Among Younger Voters
By Matt Towery
September 12, 2008
The hidden story of the last week has been the shift in many states and nationwide among the youngest of voters, those ages 18-to-29, from a solid entrenchment in the Obama camp to a significant drift toward a newly revived John McCain effort, all courtesy of Gov. Sarah Palin.
Our survey approach keeps young respondents from being interviewed by young interviewers, thus avoiding the inevitable pressure a youthful poll respondent might feel to "fit in" and claim to be a supporter of Obama. As a result, younger voters, while still favoring Obama, have moved to the McCain column in not insubstantial numbers. Exit polls showed that among this group of voters, John Kerry carried their vote by roughly a 55 percent to 45 percent margin. But that was close enough to allow Bush to win the 2004 election by a fairly comfortable margin.

Re: Obama Losing Traction Among Younger Voters
If one thinks about it, it is young people who have fostered change in society over the many thousands of years of civilization.
Now, more than ever, we need the youth of our country (and the world) to help make some changes to what is destroying our lives. If there is one thing young people can't stand it is hypocrisy in older adults. The other is being ostentatious. Obama is both...a hypocrite and outrageously ostentatious.
Agree with his politics or not, McCain is a war hero of a war that was strongly rejected by the youth of his generation. He has NEVER been a hypocrite. Yes, he and his wife, his wife mostly, are wealthy. But they spend their wealth on doing good. The adoption of that facially deformed child has not escaped the notice of young people. Gov Palin is truly the epitome of what feminism is supposed to be about...from running a business, to running a town to running a state and the most difficult of all...running a big family and still keeping her family intact. Her husband is a role model as well.
These things do not escape the sharp, judgmental eyes of young people. The more Sarah and McCain are exposed to the young people of this country, the more they will compare Obama, his wife and their "success," to the McCains and Palins, the more they will lean right.

Re: Obama Losing Traction Among Younger Voters
The young voters are a very large and important block of voters. Our problem is that from High school through collage they are being indoctrinated by liberal teachers, professors, Hollywood, MTV, Dave Letterman, etc.......
I don't know how or even IF we can ever bring back God...Country... too our youth.

Amen JLDoug: My fears exactly
But maybe with Sarah Palin as the VP, maybe she will start people thinking about God and a personal relationship with Him....etc, etc. Maybe. One can hope and pray.

Barrack, I normally don't give the enemy camp advice but in this case I'll make an exception. To correct the "TRACTION" problem put a little bit more air in your tires, that should help.

So what are the numbers, Towery? Your evaluation that they are "not insubstantial" is all well and good but we're mostly grown-ups here and have gotten into the habit of thinking for ourselves.

The article reads like the actual numbers were supposed to be in there, but that Mr. Towery forgot to add them. Matt needs to do more proofreading next time.

Re: Obama Losing Traction Among Younger Voters
Well, whatever the numbers, whatever the age group --- we can not relax, take our eyes off the ball --- we still have a fight on our hands.
Our ticket needs to perform ! So do we !!!!
Yes, I'd love to see a blow-out, a run-away -- by our ticket! Even the largest margin victory in history. Fact is, we are a part of the TEAM too, the outcome also depends on us, and we will/can share in the outcome and victory. And it will feel just as good to us as it does to John and Sarah.
I suspect that Sen. McCain, POTUS Candidate McCain, former POW McCain, will feel much like he did when he returned home from captivity in Vietnam when elected as the next POTUS - a very proud and grateful American, but mindful of 'duty to country, and country FIRST'!

Re: Obama Losing Traction Among Younger Voters
I have two 18-year-old nieces, and one 22-year-old niece. The 22-year-old is a registered Republican & McCain supporter. One of the 18-year-olds is an Obama supporter (she has been brainwashed by her mother, who thinks Obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread). The other 18-year-old was on the fence, the last time I asked. I think she may have been leaning toward McCain, because she is a committeed Zionist, but she just started her freshman year at a liberal, elitist, East Coast university, so I am afraid that her professors (as well as fellow students) might get to her before the election. She's always leaned more to the left than the right, but she had started becoming more moderate in the past year, so I think it's a toss-up. I guess the girls are a microcosm of the country -- one for McCain, one for Obama & one undecided.
