Default What Happened To Freedom?

By Henry Lamb
September 8, 2008

Zoning is one thing; social engineering is quite another. Zoning in cities and metropolitan areas, while not really necessary, can be justified if the zoning decisions are made by locally elected officials who can be held accountable by the local community. Historically, zoning has not been a concern in rural areas where neighbors are not stumbling over each other.

With the advent of sustainable development, and the notion of "smart growth," zoning has grown into comprehensive planning that encompasses the entire county, region and state. The people who promote comprehensive planning are convinced that a planned community, designed to protect the environment, is far more important than the private property rights of any individual member of the community.

Unfortunately this is what happens when "We the People" are (understandably) preoccupied with work and the sometime struggle to put food on our tables or milk in our children's bellies. These changes sneak in gradually and by the time they become painfully obvious, they are so entrenched that they are almost impossible to challenge. Ask the "little old lady" in New London, CT whose home was seized to make way for a hotel convention center how she feels about this issue. Oh, never mind, there was a "Supreme" judgement on that one!

Thumbs up Re: What Happened To Freedom?

Bring back freedom to your acreage if you live out in the country.Put up a fence, and post NO TRESPASSING SIGNS all around you property, and add a foot note.Any trespassers will be shot . See how many of those beuracrats come out and tell you to clean up what you have sweated to build. I don't think you will be bothered. If you are crazy enough to move into one of those gated, controlled sub divisions, then you will have to put up with all of this kind of junk laws, plus paying someone tp enforce them. Our Commission got in big trouble reaccessing property, for tax purposes, and the board is still trying to settle all the complaints. That assessor is no longer around either.Once in a while people have to put their feet down, and say no more, and this kind of stuff stops.
