Will young Paul, Huckabee backers stay with GOP?
By KATHRYN GRIM
Associated Press
August 21, 2008
WASHINGTON (AP) -- While this year's presidential election shows signs of drawing in more young voters than any since 1992, the candidates who pulled some of them into the Republican race are long gone -- and it's unclear whether they've taken their young supporters with them.
Once former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Texas Rep. Ron Paul were both out of the race, their many young supporters were faced with a choice: Should they switch to the party's pick, find another candidate, cast a write-in vote or sit the election out?
Huckabee and Paul appealed to young voters for qualities not associated with presumed nominee John McCain -- Huckabee for his conservative Christianity and Paul for his anti-war libertarianism.

Re: Will young Paul, Huckabee backers stay with GOP?
What really troubles me is that nobody seems to check the records of people running for office.
That is why BO got so far, and why Huckabee is still wooing the people.
When these politicians go out and give their stump speech, does anyone ever compare the speech to what they have done in real life.
BO was an empty sheet that people were writing in whatever they wanted him to be. So I could understand (to a degree) how people got sucked into his mantra of Hope and Change.
But Huckabee has a record. And since I live in the state that he governed....I am not happy with the man and his record is not all that great. In fact, on more than one occasion I have called him a "closet socialist" and I still believe that he is. He talks correctly. But once in office he acted the opposite of what he said he would do.
Does ANYONE ever pay attention to these people's records....or just their rhetoric.

Re: Will young Paul, Huckabee backers stay with GOP?
There was a lot of information on the web about both Huckabee and Paul.
Huckabee went into CYA overdrive and scrubbed a lot of stuff but we had some very good info here, as did other websites.
We had some Paul exposes here that resulted in an invasion of Paul backers from another website and lots of email threats.
Many other conservative websites published info and experienced the same thing.
The problem is that the MSM ignored the real records of both men, just as it does that of Obama.
More people need to take responsibility for looking up information and not depending on the MSM to give it to them.

Re: Will young Paul, Huckabee backers stay with GOP?
I am not sure what the term CYA means:
But it is rather disheartening to think that he (Huckabee) would have scrubbed his website. That means that he knows that what he did was wrong and not matching his words. That makes him much more troublesome to me.
But people do need to check things out. Because it is out there. Still, if I go to other conservative forums, like AFA, the majority of people there want McCain to pick Huckabee as VP. Is no one listening.
No wonder this country is in such a mess!

I've said it before: Most people want to pick a president the same way they pick "American Idol".
In other words, vote for whoever makes you feel good.

AFA is a religious conservative website.
GOPUSA is a political conservative website.
We represent the entire political spectrum and not just social issues.
Social conservatives are sometimes disinterested in fiscal and defense issues. Some, not all, don't care if Huckabee's fiscal record is liberal and they don't care that he has no foreign policy knowledge or experience.
We do.

I really liked Huckabee when all this endless political process began. I would not like too now be forced to vote for him in order to defeat Obama. Ron Paul fell out of the Keebler Tree.

The exact reason I cannot vote for McCain. No matter what he says or does because of his record I do not feel he would be any better than Obama. Sure he might not make the same choices so the country would sustain different damage but either way I believe the same amount of damage will be done.

Joe 80-86. I don't understand your logic. We cannot afford to have the Dems. to take the W.H. Maybe you should read their platform, and I believe you would change you mind and vote for Mc. How is things in Pensacola? I have relatives over there. Second, I cannot understand how some young people make up their mind who to vote for. They give some of the dunbest reasons I have ever heard of.I.E. they didn't treat him right during the debates, or He had really good social programs. I wish people would do their duty and examine each candidate on their merits, their record, and their stand on abortion. It seems that all the people for abortion are already born!
