Default The Civil Rights Shakedown: Myth Or Reality?

By Deneen Borelli
July 30, 2008

Al Sharpton is making headlines again, but it's not for one of his crusades. Instead, Sharpton, his National Action Network (NAN), and several major corporations that have donated to NAN have been subpoenaed in recent months by federal investigators.

While Sharpton's attorneys reported Tuesday that the criminal probe over millions allegedly owed in taxes by Sharpton and NAN has been dropped in lieu of civil action by the IRS, federal authorities remain tight-lipped over the status of any investigations.

Critics have long accused Sharpton of obtaining corporate contributions by threatening racial boycotts.

Sharpton denies this, saying "That's the old shakedown theory that the anti-civil-rights forces have used against us forever."

Sharpton should have been behind bars long, long ago! I'm not sure if this is a testimony to his persistence and effective use of extortion, dishonesty, protests and other unsavory and disruptive tactics or a national lack of 'nads and common sense when it comes to dealing honestly with race in this country and Sharpton in particular. Probably all of the above.

Okay let's not confuse threatening boycotts with extortion. AFA has a boycott with Ford and McDonald's for backing the homosexual agenda in this country. I am a part of the McDonald's one-[I signed the Ford one more as a part of solidarity than anything else. I don't drive so I am not buying any car much less a Ford and I have my own vendetta against Ford anyway for firing my father back in the day.] because that is something I can actually do. So boycotts are an effective way to bring out change. In fact, Ford has consistently lost money since the boycott has taken place despite other economic factors being taken into account. However, you are right they should not be used as way to get money for your organization, that is extortion. Both Jesse and Al Sharpton should be brought up on racketeering charges. It is despicable that they would use something as effective for change as the boycott to line their own pockets, leaving those who could really benefit from the change they are supposedly advocating out in the cold. I hope the book gets thrown at them both.
