Default House deals blow to proposed Mass. LNG terminal

By ANDREW MIGA
Associated Press
July 17, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House on Wednesday approved extending federal "wild and scenic" environmental protection to the lower Taunton River in Massachusetts, dealing a blow to developers who want to build a liquefied natural gas terminal on an urbanized stretch of riverbank.

The 242-175 vote, split largely along party lines, came amid Republican complaints the bill was a backdoor way for Democrats to block a proposed LNG plant in the city of Fall River, Mass. at a time when such facilities are sorely needed. GOP lawmakers said the measure underscored how Democrats aren't serious about tackling skyrocketing energy costs.

Bill critics also took aim at the commercialized riverbank area where developers want to build the terminal, saying it was more urban than wild and scenic. On the House floor, they displayed photos of Fall River to press their point.

"If this qualifies as a wild and scenic river ... then downtown Manhattan can be a national forest," said Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash.

This is just one more effort by Democrats to block any kind of energy expansion.

Another case where the Dems don't think we are smart enough to figure this out on our own.

I opened up Google Earth (If you don't have it, its really cool. Especially if you are a cartography geek like me.) and did a search of Falls River, MA. Bingo, there is the urban area.

To the left is the Taunton River, not exactly looking "wild and scenic".

Users of Google Earth can also post pictures, open up some of those and you'll see pics of...mud flats, electrical towers, commercial ships.

Follow the river notheast and what do you see, located on Weavers Cove, it looks like an oil supply depot. So it's not like there isn't industrialization on this river today.

Maybe the Dems want the poor folks in MA to freeze this winter? Or if you follow the Taunton, you see it flows down to Newport, and maybe the Dems are bowing to pressure from some influential money.

How much does a ton a coal cost...thinking about buying my own coal fired boiler so i can run my own electric generator as that is what i would need to live under the dems energy policy.

Maybe, if i made it big enough, I could sell electric to my neighbors when they have none. Im sure some liberal activist would see my smoke stack and shut me down real quick...though if the stack was disguised as a regular chimney....
