No Permanent GOP Minority
By Robert D. Novak
July 7, 2008
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When House Republican leaders left Washington for their Fourth of July break, they felt good about outwitting the Democratic majority. The feeling was not reciprocated 3,000 miles away, where conservative California Republican activists were drafting an ultimatum. The Lincoln Club of Orange County is telling GOP leaders of both the House and Senate that it is too late to repent. They must go -- or else lose big money.
The message: "Come Nov. 5, should the current GOP leadership in either house survive to lead in a new Congress, the Lincoln Club of Orange County will review the financial backing of all congressional Republicans, and we urge others to do likewise. A GOP caucus that would re-elect such leaders is not one we would likely continue to support. Because, simply put, we refuse to support a permanent minority."

Re: No Permanent GOP Minority
I've personally been sending the same message for several years. Perhaps if a few more large donor groups jump aboard, these 'business as usual' Republicans in DC will finally take notice.

Re: No Permanent GOP Minority
Time to dump the incumbents! Until they start paying attention to their constituents.
Honestly, the problem is as much us as them. Democrats are excellent at sending letters and faxes to congressmen. Individual congressmen get a skewed sense of reality. In so many communities, the libs have penetrated the local newspapers and make it seem they are the majority when they are a small but very vocal minority.
We have the power. McCain's Shamnesty Bill went down in flames because conservatives were mobilized by talk radio.
People - it is all great that we get to rant with like minded political junkies here in this blogosphere, but if we really want to make a difference, start sending letters and faxes, or call. Urge you friends to do so as well. I just had this conversation with a conservative friend who said he had enough, but wasn't sure how to make a difference.
Ask any congressman, and they will tell you that enough letters and calls make a difference.

Re: No Permanent GOP Minority
I have voted 'PUB ever since I was old enough, until the recent TX primary - voted for Ron Paul.
I'll never vote for an congressional incumbent, nor a lawyer for congress again - including the OK US senators from TX.

Re: No Permanent GOP Minority
This is a good first step in straightening out the mess in Washington, but we need to also spread this message to Democrats. There is absolutely no good reason to have a Senator or Representative for life! Those that we do have like the Kennedy's, Upchuck Schumer, the Poodle (Kerry), Robert KKK Byrd, Rockefeller etc. etc etc. do not represent the voters that elected them. Instead they represent the Democratic party. With term limits, and the prospect of having to go back to the private sector to earn a living we might just get more politicians who actually have a clue as to how they affect their constituents and how capitalism works. These jokers sure as heck don't... and their Republican counterparts are also questionable...

Re: No Permanent GOP Minority
After the abysmal primary here in FL, where the RINO Governor threw his support behind McCan't, leaving perfectly good Conservative candidates in the wings, I went down to the registrars office and re-registered as an NPA. I sent a nasty-gram to the RNC Chair and the FGOP Chair telling them they can no longer automagically count on my Republican vote. For all I care now, the Republican Party can crash and burn and hopefully out of the ashes a Phoenix of Conservatives can arise. Nobama and Norinos!

Re: No Permanent GOP Minority
It has been obvious to me the last 4 years that the GOP has deserted the people that put them in office.Several letters to my 2 Senators got responses bland and noncommital. So, the only way we will get change is to change our " reperesentatives" in the House and Senate.Vote against All incumbents..This should go for both Democrats and Republicans. No matter who is re-elected, in any offfice,we won't get change with the same crowd. We have an extreme socialist running against a non-conservative for president.I see no choice of voting for the less evil.....so 3rd party is the only good choice for me.Maybe this is the best time to get a 3rd party established.

Re: No Permanent GOP Minority
Great news from the Orange County Lincoln Club. They join the Club for Growth and the Senate Conservatives Fund as effective Conservative Army Regulars (money people) who can help dump the big-government crowd that dominates the Republican Party.
But, make no mistake, it's going to be a very tough battle trying to dislodge that crowd. As an example of what conservatives are up against, the effective Conservative Militia (campaign volunteers) in my neighborhood mounted an impromptu challenge to Congressman David Dreier, a 28-year incumbent who adamently defends his earmarks and belongs to the Republican Main Street Partnership (whose purpose is to elect liberal Republicans). He preferred to spend $100,000 in the primary rather than foresaking earmarks. Our candidate garnered 27% of the vote, which underscores the dissatisfaction with Dreier. But, with an effective $4,000,000 war chest that every incumbent Congressman has via franking priviledges, hometown staff, TV exposure, etc., guys like Dreier really do have a lock on the job.
The folks in my town have declared their independence from the Republican Party. We've declared war on big-government Republicans, and we're already recruiting a stronger and better-funded candidate to run against Dreier in 2010. You might think about doing the same in your neighborhood.
