Conservative evangelicals discuss backing McCain
By ERIC GORSKI
Associated Press
July 3, 2008
(AP) -- Conservative evangelical leaders met privately this week to discuss putting aside their misgivings about John McCain and coalescing around the Republican's presidential bid while urging him to consider social conservative favorite Mike Huckabee as a running mate.
About 90 of the movement's leading activists gathered Tuesday night in Denver for a meeting convened by Mathew Staver, who heads the Florida-based legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel.
Many evangelical leaders backed other GOP candidates early on and remain wary of McCain's commitment to their causes and his previous criticisms of movement leaders. But with the presidential field now set, many evangelical leaders are taking a more pragmatic view, realizing also that the Democratic candidate, Barack Obama, is making a strong play for evangelical voters and talking freely about his faith.

I'm afraid that Ole Huck has split his britches with our side.

Thats good because your choice stinks
Quote:
"This is a man you don't threaten," Burress said of McCain. "His principles are his principles. The last thing you want to do is try to force him to do something he doesn't want to do because he'd probably do the opposite

How well we Conservatives know that. We are trying our damnedest to get him elected in spite of his hard head.
Quote:
"The only evangelicals that will support Obama are the ones who haven't read their Bible," Burress said. "The more and more we learn about Obama, the closer and closer we get to McCain."

Right on the mark with this observation.

Evangelicals? Always welcome! Your voices deserve to be heard.
Huckabee? Thanks very much, but NO Thanks! He doesn't speak to the majority who have seen past his religious facade to view the insatiable egotist behind it.

Well, you could have an atheist who is very knowledgeable of the Bible. There will always be some "Christians" and non-Christians trying to interpret the Bible in ways that would fit their unbiblical agenda. Remember, satan could quote Bible verses when he tried to get Jesus to waver during His 40 days and 40 nights of fasting.
As for McCain's VP choice, he should be somebody who is a conservative in the truest sense.

Well, I'm glad they're realizing that there is NO CHOICE but to vote for McCain--I have to ditto everything Mr. JLDoug said

Re: Conservative evangelicals discuss backing McCain
Well, I'm certainly glad to hear this! I heard someone being interviewed on the radio yesterday who said "more evangelicals will be pulling the lever for Obama this time"---I wrote the interviewer and asked him why he didn't question the guy (I have no idea who he was) he was talking to about the abortion and gay marriage question.
Surprisingly, I received no reply.
Dobson may rue the day he refused to vote for McCain!

Re: Conservative evangelicals discuss backing McCain
Huckabee is too much of an opportunist for me.
And the VP could be a strong player, or not. Remains to be seen.

Re: Conservative evangelicals discuss backing McCain
I kinda have the idea that Jingel or Romney will get the VP spot?
I certainly hope Huckabee doesn't...we don't need anymore government spending

Re: Conservative evangelicals discuss backing McCain
Obama or McCain....
Anyone with any values or Christian beliefs has only one choice.
We all need to urge our friends and family and fellow believers to vote for McCain.
Obama is very, very frightening!!!!!! The man has no character and no experience. He is all talk!
Conservatives and evangelicals need to come out in full force for McCain.

Re: Conservative evangelicals discuss backing McCain
If you look at the 2004 Election Results:
62 MILLION voted for President George W. Bush
59 MILLION voted for Kerry (Lurch).
I think Senator McCain will need all 62 MILLION
of those votes from conservatives, evanglicals,
and much more.
Obama as POTUS is too scary a thought to comtemplate!!!!!!!!! !!!!
