Right To Bear Arms
By Linda Chavez
June 27, 2008
Washington, D.C., will become a safer place to live and work thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Thursday against the city's absolute ban on handguns. The Court ruled that the Second Amendment's guarantee of the right to bear arms is an individual right, not just one that permits states to maintain militias, striking down one of the nation's toughest anti-gun laws. As someone who lived in the District at the time the city imposed its ban 32 years ago, I say it's about time.
I bought my first gun in 1974 after my husband was mugged in broad daylight just blocks from the White House. My husband was picking up our 6-year-old son from school when a man approached him and demanded money. When my husband refused, the man picked up a two-by-four and hit him on the back of the head, knocking him to the ground.

Re: Right To Bear Arms
The decision left me wondering if the dissenting minority justices have ever read the constitution.
Didn't take long for the mayors of Chicago and San Francisco to start howling!
They are prepared to spent $MM of taxpayer funds to defend their bans, but perhaps ought to get some competent legal advice at the outset.

I applaud this very big ruling, but it was way to close. I can't believe that Kennedy and Souter were picked by Republican presidents to serve on the supreme court. They are a disgrace.

Re: Right To Bear Arms
O'Reilly (and, no doubt, many others before him) had it right last night when he pointed out the silliness of expecting criminals to obey gun laws while ignoring every other law.

Jack V., when they were nominated, both expressed an outward appearance of being constitution-supporting candidates. It was only after their conformations that their true liberal agenda of not supporting the constitution started to surface. So basically, these two individuals falsified their job application. Sounds like grounds for termination if you ask me.

Re: Right To Bear Arms
It has ALWAYS been my contention that the criminal will always find a way to acquire guns or any other weapon, leaving the law abiding citizen at their mercy. What is it about that "common sense" conclusion that our esteemed politicians DON'T get? How about cracking down on law breakers when they BEGIN to break the law instead of slapping them on the wrists and sending them on their merry way to offend again?
Now, Chicago's Mayor Daly is screaming the outrageousness of the Supreme Court decision and saying that it will cost the taxpayers MORE money now to add more police on the streets. Living in suburban Chicago, I'd say their record for curbing violent crime is shameful!!! Just read the papers for the senseless murders just THIS year alone. What does the Mayor OR any of the gun control advocates care about spending money on legal battles? It isn't THEIR money . . . . it's the taxpayers who are paying for THEIR agenda!!!
For ONCE, the Justices got it right, even though the vote was very close. . . . . they "GOT 'ER DONE!!!!"

Re: Right To Bear Arms
I wonder how you impeach a SCJ? I have never really thought about it. I assume congress would have to initiate that. If so, i'm afraid we have a snowballs chance in hell of impeachment being brought up. Jack R. i believe your right they must have done a great acting job of pretending to be conservatives. Thank god Bush was able to get Roberts and Alitio on the SC. I can't imagine what kind of wacko's would be named to the bench by Obama.

Re: Right To Bear Arms
I live in a fairly safe city where someone would seldom find trouble unless looking for it. Even any of our home invasion or burglary seldom results in serious injuries or violence. Sexual attacks are a little more prevalent. Having said this, I take the Boy Scouts motto "Always be Prepared".
Thats why I own fire arms, have a permit to carry my concealed hand gun, and do so.
I find it appalling that any law abiding American Citizen could be denied his/her 2 Amendment rights and have to live under the conditions Mrs Chavez did.
Another thing I noticed...

I glad she did but I wonder what triggered this transformation? Could she ,like myself,no longer stomach the Liberal BS that is destroying this country?
Thank God for Ronald Regan. He opened my eyes and I pray that there is another like him to
lead this Nation again.

Righton Poppi, that clam of increased crime is more Liberal control BS. The body count may go up but it will be the criminals taken to the morgue instead of the defenseless citizen. A gun in the hand is better than a dozen cops at the station.

Re: Right To Bear Arms
My question is , why did Congress allow this
violation of our constitution rights to begin with? I think everyone of them should be replace.
