By winning back unhappy GOP voters, McCain makes it a race - By ALAN FRAM and TREVOR TOMPSON, Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans are no longer underdogs in the race for the White House. To pull that off, John McCain has attracted disgruntled GOP voters, independents and even some moderate Democrats who shunned his party last fall.

Partly thanks to an increasingly likable image, the Republican presidential candidate has pulled even with the two Democrats still brawling for their party's nomination, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo news poll released Thursday. Just five months ago — before either party had winnowed its field — the survey showed people preferred sending an unnamed Democrat over a Republican to the White House by 13 percentage points.

*And thanks to the ongoing war between the two Democrats, very much enhanced by Rush's Operation Chaos.

Talking Re: By winning back unhappy GOP voters, McCain makes it a race

We had better hope that McCain wins the general because the other ones would bring this country out of recession and into a deep depression, we might never pull out of . It should be a no brainer we can't afford to pay what we should pay because of politicians dipping into the social security funds and not putting any back and we can't afford another boondoggle program it would bankrupt the country in a year or two . Taxes would be upped to a trillion dollars and no one can imagine how much that is it is a bunch . the one item that seals it for me is the cutting out of pig swelled bills that do nothing but reward no doers and personal friends, Murtha needs to be stopped from giving away another dime of tax money, he is a crook.

However, another reason to worry about McCain. His buddy Lieberman, has just submitted a bill, despite many scientists disagreement, to launch a bill that will begin taxing to cover global warming. This is without any cost/benefit analysis or debate among those that do not believe this is anything more than an earth cycle. This is going to drastically raise taxes, thus goods and services, etc., etc., etc.

All these candidates scare me.

Question Re: By winning back unhappy GOP voters, McCain makes it a race

I read this story twice and I don't see the substantiation for the heading of "winning back unhappy GOP voters." They quote moderates, undecideds, and those who "say they are conservative." And, as is typical of media political polls, 56% are Democrats. I have been a stalwart GOP voter in the past, and McCain has done nothing to win me back. He and the GOP have forsaken my support too many times, and they are going to need a lot more than AP polls and two Socialist opponents to get me to the polls in November.

I'm wondering in McCain would be this popular if a viable third party candidate were to appear.

Remember, he say's that the lesson learned from last years immigration reform bill that got defeated soundly was "secure the boarders first"!

The real lesson is "Most Americans are against ammisty in any form!"

Until McCain admits that ammisty is dead, he will not be getting any votes from our family!

My wife is a legal immigrant, and we had to wait 11 months from our wedding overseas until she was allowed to arrive in America. No illegal immagrents should be allowed to stay without waiting outside America for at least 11 months!

As long as the jackass candidates keep shooting themselves in the foot or continue to suffer their own peculiar foot in mouth disease, McCain wins by default.

Whether he's winning unhappy GOP voters certainly isn't clear from the data in this poll. He seems to be strongest with the independents - people with no declared or apparent principles.

I think AP completely misunderstands McCain's support.

Yes, some of it comes from conservatives who understand how much more an Obama or Hillary can hurt the country.

I can't prove this but I think a lot of it comes from independents and Democrats who also understand how much Hillary or Obama will hurt the country and who are turned off by their obvious lies.

Beyond that there is a segment of conservatives who won't vote for McCain no matter how much more Obama or Hillary will hurt the country.

I don't mean this to sound cold but it may not matter if they stay home or vote third party. I've always thought that IF McCain wins this it will be because of moderate voters.

McCain alienated his base to pursue the center. The problem with that strategy is that the center does not give to candidates, it is the base that pays the bills. I am afraid that McCain is simply going to run out of cash and we will be stuck with 4 to 8 years of Democrats in power. The good news is that they will not be able to sustain their power. Their policies fail every time because they are based in emotion not fact. Both Democratic candidates said last night during the debate that they would raise capital gains taxes even in the face of the fact that historically this tactic has resulted in less revenue for the government which was correctly pointed out by the interviewer. They are so committed to their ideology that they ignore the plain facts in front of their face. They say that they are concerned about what the rest of the globe thinks of the US but are willing to pull another Vietnam which devastated this country. They are fools!!! My biggest concern is the lasting damage that they will cause. The appointment of judges lasts long after they leave office and has resulted in chaos in this country. I ask those who plan to stay home to please reconsider. The damage that these two could cause this country may never be repaired.

As I see it McCain's only real hope is to choose his running mate wisely. Even though I voted for Huckabee (Hunter was my first choice), I believe Romney may be the best choice for VP. I believe that McCain and Romney make a good team for the times that we are in, war and economy.

Lightbulb Re: By winning back unhappy GOP voters, McCain makes it a race

First, let us all take a breath and realize that there is NO VIABLE THIRD PARTY. Second, the two leftist loons now competing in the Dem primaries are so dangerous, that ole John looks like Reagan compared to them. Third, down ticket Republican office seekers must be elected to give ole John support to a. put Scalia like jurists on SCOTUSb. cut taxes and spending c. win the war against Islamofascism. Fourth, Pub purists must decide whether they want their nation to fall into a Third World socialist pacifist status by allowing Obama to win the Nov. election. John is neither. In spite of his flawed voting patterns, many of his votes in Congress have been moderate conservative. Just look it up and stop voting with an emotional bent. THAT IS WHAT LIBERALS DO.
