Default McCain vs. The Addicts

By Robert D. Novak
March 10, 2008

WASHINGTON -- The congressional Republican establishment's charade, pretending to crack down on spending earmarks while actually preserving their uncontrolled addiction to pork, faces embarrassment this week when the Democratic-designed budget is brought to the Senate floor. The party's presidential nominee-presumptive, Sen. John McCain, is an uncompromising pork buster with no use for the evasions by Republican addicts on Capitol Hill.

Sen. Jim DeMint, a first-term reform Republican from South Carolina, will propose a no-loopholes one-year moratorium on earmarks as a budget amendment. McCain has announced his support for the DeMint amendment and will co-sponsor it. DeMint wants to coordinate McCain's visits from the campaign trail to the Senate floor so the candidate can be there to speak for and vote for the moratorium.

Exclamation Re: McCain vs. The Addicts

Frankly, this is just one more example of how and why the Democrats will have the next President in office.

Although I've been a Republican for many years and from a family consisting of many generations of Republicans, this candidate McCain, who somehow squeezed his way into being the Republican nominee is an embarassment to the GOP!!

McCain says he "gets it" where the immigration issue is concerned, but clearly he does not! He admits that finances are not his strong suit but that's fairly obvious since the immigration issue alone has had a profound impact on the economy and finances that are in a state of crisis in this country. Casting a vote for McCain would be worse than re-electing Bush, who is about the most miserable President in history.

Hopefully fellow Republicans will let this election go to the Democrats and after they've botched it up, there will be another chance in 2012 to restore the GOP to the party it once was and have a candidate worth our support . . .

Best be careful what you wish for, if you think things are bad now, just wait. Things are heading left now, with all this political correctness crap, what can or can not be taught in our schools. Our taxes will go up, give away programs galor............

We need to vote Republican from bottom up, this is the only way to get good people to move up to higher political spots to stop the Dems.

Never, I will keep fighting to help Republican win this fall.

Workingmom, did you read the article?

It's not about immigration.

It's about stopping earmarks which is one of the things that McCain does get and wants to stop.

The problem is that McCain doesn't get it on too many other things.

I agree with Candles. To simply give up and allow the liberals to run things for a minimum of 4 to a maximum of ?? years is just wrong and basically silly.

The damage that can be done in 4 years of an Obama and/or Clinton administration would be catastrophic.

Now, back to being on-topic:

Until voters realize that this "pork" they receive is coming right out of their own pockets, it will never be stopped. It's hard to imagine that there are people that think their representative is "doing them a huge favor" by bringing in all this free cash for projects.

I hate to have to say this, but never in the history of the United States has our Congress been so corrupt, inept, incompetent and uncaring.

At least McCain "gets it" when it comes to earmarks. There are much worse candidates than John McCain.

I surely hope that we can get the earmarks stopped, billions are spent on stupid littles programs, Or hugh one that only help a few. Congress has gotten fat off the pork for ever and it's time to stop it. I hope that congress can get something done and at least give us a break on this spending. If Mcanin is worth is salt he will get 'er done. I have my doubts that anything will happen in Washington Its teaming with maggots.

This is a primary reason that the Republican Party is in a tailspin. With the Republican leadership working hard to expand earmarks while the base of the party wants the size and scope of the federal government reduced.

As long as the party leadership continues to be at odds with the people, the Republican Party will continue to slide into oblivion.

OK, I totally disagree on Immigration with McCain also - but PLEASE! WorkingMom's post shows that we already have a "hate McCain 1st" in the Reps like we have "hate Bush 1st" in the Dems!
McCain is a Hawk, and he is a pork buster. These 2 things should show that we can work with him, even if he wasn't your choice for the GOP candidate.
We need strong leadership, especially with foreign policy and Islamofascism, and we need someone to at least START the process of pulling back gov't growth, and pork busting is a good start! If we have a President that will back up Colburn and DeMint, we have a good start at fixing the economy. We can still hold McCain's feet to the fire over illegals, but this is a start, and with a good, strong face of the US towards the rest of the world~

This congress is so inept & corrupt in my opinion that not much will save it, that being said the proposed bill is full of loopholes an Elephant could walk through. Pork will still be here , much like the McCain Feingold bill. It just allows McCain to grandstand one more time before the MSN proceeds to destroy him prior to November.
