Default McCain's Straight Lies

By Thomas Sowell
February 1, 2008

We have been hearing for years that Senator John McCain gives "straight talk" and his bus has been endlessly referred to as the "straight talk express." But endless repetition does not make something true.

The fact that McCain makes short, blunt statements does not make him a straight-talker.

There are short, blunt lies -- and he told a big one on the eve of the Florida primary, when he claimed that Mitt Romney had advocated a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.

Even the Washington Post, which supports McCain, said that the Senator "has distorted the meaning" of what Governor Romney said, that Romney "has never proposed setting 'a date for withdrawal.'"

Straight talker my a__, he is nothing but a liar, cheat and traitor to the Republican (conservatives) Party. He is a democrat lying to everyone. If we get him as the candidate then I will write in a name because it will be like getting Hillary. They are both scary and the only other choice is Obama who is a muslim (that is scary too) What has this nation come to but its final downfall.

As I've said all along - McCain is just a wolf (Demo) in sheep's (Rep) clothing. If we let him slide with this and elect him just imagine what he will be capable of doing to us. He and Hillary probably have a sidebar agreement going that will allow a lot of her agenda items to meet fruition via McCain. God help us all.

McCAIN ATTACKS FELLOW REPUBLICANS

A Top Ten List ...

1. Defending His Amnesty Bill, Sen. McCain Lost His Temper And "Screamed, 'F*ck You!' At Texas Sen. John Cornyn" (R-TX) (Charles Hurt, "Raising McCain," New York Post, 5/19/07)

2. In 2000, Sen. McCain Ran An Attack Ad Comparing Then-Gov. George W. Bush To Bill Clinton. " (McCain 2000, Campaign Ad, 2/9/00; www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHoXkCprdL4)

3. Sen. McCain Repeatedly Called Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) An "A**hole", Causing A Fellow GOP Senator To Say, "I Didn't Want This Guy Anywhere Near A Trigger." "Senator Hothead," Newsweek, 2/21/00)

4. Sen. McCain Had A Heated Exchange With Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) And Called Him A "F*cking Jerk." (Evan Thomas, et al., "Senator Hothead," Newsweek, 2/21/00)

5. In 1995, Sen. McCain Had A "Scuffle" With 92-Year-Old Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC) On The Senate Floor. (Harry Jaffe, "Senator Hothead," The Washingtonian, 2/97)

6. Sen. McCain Accused Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Of The "Most Egregious Incident" Of Corruption He Had Seen In The Senate. (Amy Keller, "Attacks Escalate In Depositions," Roll Call, 10/21/02)

7. Sen. McCain Attacked Christian Leaders And Republicans In A Blistering Speech During The 2000 Campaign. MCCAIN: “Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are corrupting influences on religion and politics” (Sen. John McCain, Remarks, Virginia Beach, VA, 2/28/00)

8. Sen. McCain Attacked Vice President Cheney. (Roger Simon, "McCain Bashes Cheney Over Iraq Policy," The Politico, 1/24/07)

9. Celebrating His First Senate Election In 1986, Sen. McCain Screamed At And Harassed A Young Republican Volunteer. Hinz said McCain's treatment of the young campaign worker in 1986 troubled him for years. “He (McCain) was screaming at him, and he was red in the face. It wasn't right, and I was very upset at him.'" (Kris Mayes and Charles Kelly, "Stories Surface On Senator's Demeanor," The Arizona Republic, 11/5/99)

10. Sen. McCain "Publicly Abused" Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL). “McCain often insults people and flies off the handle... There have been the many times McCain has called reporters 'liars' and 'idiots' when they have had the audacity to ask him unpleasant, but pertinent, questions. McCain once... publicly abused Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama." (Editorial, "There's Something About McCain," The Austin American-Statesman, 1/24/07)

And those are just a sampling of the attacks on Republicans. How about the Democrats?

I've always had great respect for John McCain because of his military service and record. However, the more I hear him speak and look at his voting record in the Senate, the less I TRUST him. I am especially alarmed at his stand on illegal immigration. I think the MSM is concentrating on Senator McCain because they feel he is less likely to win over Clinton or Obama than is Mitt Romney.
I hate "mud slinging" and feel that those who initiate or engage in it are trying to take the public's eye off the real issues at hand.
I've had to do a lot of soul searching, but have cast my absentee ballot for Romney. I feel he is our only hope to save our country from the wolves who would destroy it!!!!

McCain's constant reminder that he fought and was imprisoned in Vietnam doesn't excuse his reprehensible behavior since returning although it raises suspicions that he came home with more than a few screws loose.

It now appears that the only reason he ever ran as a Republican in the first place was that at the time, a Dem couldn't even be elected dog catcher in Arizona. He's certainly done nothing in DC to distinguish himself as a leader in basic GOP causes. To the contrary, he's constantly sought the limelight for himself, regardless of how that was achieved. Winning the support of the MSM was easy: simply champion their pet liberal causes.

It will take years and a very strong visonary leader for the GOP to recover if McCain continues in his heretofor winning ways.

Thomas Sowell and each of the comments here are so right. McCain isn't just a maverick, he is a deal maker, and he has lied regarding Mitt Romney's statements. His temper will not bring reason and conservative ideals to the White House or the Congress or values we can be proud of.

McCain is truely in the wrong party. When asked to support the marriage amendment or proposals on life issues, he would not help Senator Rick Santorum.

We must review 1976 and 1996 loses with "moderates" Ford and Dole. This general election with McCain as the Repbulican standard bearer will be a repeat that will leave many conservatives and others home because they will feel they are getting a democrat either way.

At this point, I pray that the Crooked Talk express will be stopped for inspection, and be sidelined for a better choice.

I've grown so tired of hearing about McCain's stay at the Hanoi Hilton. It has absolutely no relevance whatsoever with what is going on today. McCain, Clinton, Obama are all cut from the same cloth. The only difference between the three is that Obama has no experience in big league politics. Folks, I've always been an optimist, but I have grave trepidations for our country. All three of these people are DANGEROUS. I also fear that we have seen our best days as a nation, because of so many of the multitude's tasting of the liberal Koolaide.
Would dearly love to hear (via private message) from any of you that would beg to differ with me.

TJ, I almost posted that elsewhere on the Forum, but didn't. I agree 100%. I admire his service, but hundreds of thousands of men and women have served our country admirably. I'm sorry that he spent time as a POW, but that doesn't buy him a ticket to the Whitehouse. And his experience as a POW does not qualify him as CIC. If anything, it has caused him biases that could be harmful to our country in the long run (see the quote about hating "gooks" in today's Precinct thread). I honestly believe the man is spiteful and vindictive, and would be dangerous with the power given to him as President.

You think we're hated as a country now? Wait til McCain becomes our "ambassador" to the world.

We'd appreciate it if you'd discuss politics in the open forum. The same rules apply to PMs as apply to the board so I really don't see any reason not to discuss it here.
