Thompson: National Security Is Top Issue
By SHELIA BYRD
Associated Press
November 20, 2007
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- National security will be the biggest issue facing the United States during the next president's term, said Republican Fred Thompson, who is campaigning to be the one in the White House then.
Thompson said the Soviet Union used to be the biggest threat to America. Now, it's al-Qaida and other groups, including ''rogue nations in various stages of nuclear capability,'' he said.
''Iraq and Afghanistan are the current front in a much bigger global conflict that we're engaged in,'' Thompson said during a news conference before a $100-per-plate Mississippi Republican party fundraising dinner.

Re: Thompson: National Security Is Top Issue
I genuinely like Fred, and will gladly vote for him, should he get the nomination. Living in Ohio, I long ago learned not to get too excited about primary candidates, since half will be gone before our primary. I was a big Forbes fan years back, and never got the opportunity to support him with my vote.
That said, Fred's best move right now would be to provide examples of management skills to voters. His conservative attitudes are evident, but a history of marshalling forces to acheive conservative ends would surely help his chances of success.
Overall, the Republican field is much stronger in this respect. Governors and businessmen are always better candidates than representatives of constituencies with strong ideals minus executive experience. Surely Guliani, Romney, and Huckabee have it all over Clinton and Obama. Tancredo has some executive history he can draw upon, should he decide to, and I believe several others surely have some experience they should point up. The dems have no such candidate, save Richardson, ( and he's dead to the GLB bunch, and un-electable ).
Executive ability is what will be the deciding factor when the dust settles. If Fred wants to win, ( or Duncan or Ron Paul, for that matter ), they had best start trotting out those bona fides.

You could even say it is the ONLY issue.
As you may know from other posts, I am strongly in favor of securing our borders, improving our immigration laws, and enforcing the law as described in the SAVE act currently being considered in Congress. I am also a strong supporter of the Fair Tax and against the socialism being forced on us by Democrats. (These are positions shared by Fred to some degree.)
But if we lose the War on Terror, the rest is meaningless.

Re: Thompson: National Security Is Top Issue
National security is my number one issue.
This is part of the reason why Fred Thompson will be receiving my support. If we don't secure our country first, nothing else will matter.

Re: Thompson: National Security Is Top Issue
Fred is absolutely right. This is the "big" issue. I feel that Fred is the only one that would protect us all. Fred has a presence about him that I think will send chills to other countries who aspire to kill us or put us under Sharia law. As to his fellow candidates, they just don't have "it." Ron Paul has such a screechy voice, I think anyone would have a problem taking any threat from him seriously when he comes off like a fishwife, and he seems to have too many left leaning ideas for me. I think the only other candidate that would be a threat to other countries is Duncan Hunter. Even Rudy and Mitt aren't "scary" enough. Tancredo, well he's wrapped up in immigration and Huckabee, while I like him, I don't think he knows which end is up yet.
Time will tell, but I'm with Fred.

Re: Thompson: National Security Is Top Issue
In the last Democrat debate only 2 of the 7 agreed that the first priority of the president is to protect the American people, over the human rights of others including terrorists.
This is chilling. Spread the word.
