Default For Thompson And McCain, It's Too Little Too Late

By Doug Patton
November 6, 2007

U. S. Sen. John McCain, R-AZ, has spent the better part of the last decade running for president. He actively sought the office in 2000 and lost handily to George W. Bush. Since that time, he has done everything he could think of to antagonize the base of his own party.

Former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-TN, acts as if the thought of running for president just occurred to him five minutes ago. Some days he acts as though it still hasn't occurred to him.

For very different reasons, these two men, with their totally different approaches to politics, have probably slammed the door on their chances for winning the Republican presidential nomination.

Don't jump on Fred too quick. There are alot of us Christian Conservatives that believe States rights are more important than what the Federal Government says. I believe that is what Fred is saying but he sometimes has a hard time explaining it. I still think he understands the Separation of the Federal and State governments and their respective responsibilties better than any of the candidates. I also believe that he understands the Constitution says nothing about the separation of Church and State. Give Him time and I believe you will change your mind on his candidancy. You mention Romney and Guiliani as somehow ligitimate choices to us when we do not see them as in the running. Just so you will know there still is a battle between the North and South that has not been settled. STATES RIGHTS.Who really cares what the people in Iowa and New Hampshire think. Most are a bunch of loons. They do not speak for all of us.

I'm not so sure about that. I can understand McCain's situation but Thompson's slow reaction to outside influences of "hurry up and show us something" as quickly as we would like doen't mean he has lost his chance intirely.

I feel he is holding his "hand" until he feels it's the right moment to be called...then I think he will show what he's been holding. Every other candidate from both sides are rushing to the finish line with all their cards showing and banners flying right and left trying to influence the voters over and over they are the right one to fill the job.

I don't think I'll give up on the tortoise yet...he's steadily in the race even though it appears by many he doesn't have a chance.

I suppose all things being equal i probably lean more toward Thompson right now more than the others. I doubt Fred will suffer from exhaustion on the campaign trail. It is really to bad Duncan Hunter doesn't have the same name recognition as Thompson.

I disagree the amnesty issue is dead. McCain has shown on more than one occasion he doesn't care about what the citizens think and he will be pushing for amnesty again. There are better candidates than McCain.

There are better candidates than Thompson but they just haven't generated the name recognition and the MSM doesn't want to take a change on any of the second tier candidates gaining traction.

While John McCain has made very clear his positions on Amnesty and Campaign Finance, he has exhibited very little conservative leadership anywhere. He is out of touch with the conservative Christian base even on the issues where he makes a stand. Fred Thompson seems to have tried to dodge the bullet on the key issues that matter most to conservative Republicans. This position does not serve him well. There are seriuos problems in Rudy's positions on abortion, superior gay privilege and immagration via 'sanctuary cities' for illegals. Mitt Romney poses a problem for many in the Christian community, rightfully so or not. Mike Huckabee is not a true conservative and embraces amnasty. Ron Paul should be a Democrat. The true conservatives in the race have been forced out because of a lack of money or can not seem to get their message out. Now, where does that leave us? This is a question many, perhaps most, conservatives are pondering at this time. We must insist that our candidates stop acting and sounding like liberal Democrats. They must take a conservative stand, dig in and give us someone/something to fight for. We simply must not allow another White House occupancy by the Clintons

Thumbs up Re: For Thompson And McCain, It's Too Little Too Late

In my opinion, the ideal candidate all along has been and continues to be Mitt Romney. Governornor Romney represents "exactly" what America has been lacking and what we need today more than ever. A "proven leader with impeccable values, morals and history. He also has proven imself over and over to be a fighter for the values that he presents. Just look at his record of accomplishment as Governor of one of the most liberal states in the country.

Well said Danny!
Thompson does understand things that the others do not. The two 'biggies' should not even be Federal issues.
I believe Fred will do what it takes to run the country properly.
I guess since the media cannot find anything that makes him look bad, they are just pretty much ignoring him.
You said, "You mention Romney and Guiliani as somehow ligitimate choices to us when we do not see them as in the running."
DITTO!
And McCain has just had too much rage in the recent past to cause me to be able to trust his temper. With all the things going on in the world that have to be dealt with, we need someone who has common sense and patience.
If Fred is not 'in the running' there is really nobody in the race on the Republican side. I like a few of them, but they would not get my vote for President of the USA. And since I would like it to stay a sovereign United States of America, I see no other choice. Except Newt and I don't see him running. Wouldn't a FRED/NEWT or NEWT/FRED ticket be great!
Go FRED!!

I watched the Thompson interview on Meet the Press and was impressed with the fact that he did not necessarily have the same slick answers that every other policitian has for their talking points.

He seem thoughtful and sincere. I look at Rommey and he is every bit as slick as Hilary with his smooth answers ehich makes you wonder if you can trust him any more than you can trust Senator Clinton.

I don't know. Patton may be right; maybe not. I do think McCain can't get the nomination. I think it's early to rule Fred out. Admittedly, he hasn't shot out the lights, but neither did GWB at this stage of the game. Rudy is in the lead now, but that can change. I realize I'm sounding ambiguous and am not at all worried about it. I'm just gonna sit back and watch. The GOP is the right party and things will work out for the best.
