Default Senate Republicans May Sink Bush's U.N. Treaty

By Cliff Kincaid
October 25, 2007

Can the U.N.'s Law of the Sea Treaty not only be delayed but defeated outright in the Senate? That's the question that conservatives are delightfully pondering as a remarkable series of events has put the pact, supported by the Bush Administration and the liberal leadership in the Senate, in serious jeopardy. Perhaps the most significant development is the announcement by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell that he will oppose the White House and vote against the treaty.

As opponents of the treaty make their case in advertisements and on cable TV and talk radio, Republican senators are increasingly hearing from their constituents that they don't want the treaty ratified because it will undermine American sovereignty and hand more power over to the United Nations.

Now Senators in congress, how much more explaining do you need than this! Clear as mud?

But why should we constituents worry...we stupidly thought you intellectuals, we elected to make learned decisions, were able to figure this one out in a New York minute!

Maybe we should pass a law requiring each Senator and Representative to have a "citizen advisor" along side to help out with these very difficult decisions when they pop up. Rotation each month as to give every citizen a chance to participate in hard decision making might be appropriate.

This is another major issue where I part company with GWB. I believe this would be a disaster for America if it is passed.

Everyone with Republican Senators should contact them and encourage each to oppose this terrible treaty.

I'll contact Lieberman and Dodd, but there is no chance they will agree with me.

As I understand it, thirty-four votes against it will be enough to stop this from being passed.

This treaty is latest in the growing list of unfortunate decisions made by President Bush. The President does seem to be missing the message that the voter base is sending.

For every veto of an expansion of government like SCHIP, we seem to get a dozen issues more suited to Democats than to Republicans.

It is to be wondered if he has forgotten his role as the political leader of the GOP. The actions of the President have made it increasingly difficult for his fellow Republicans, if they are viewed as too closely allied to him, to run successful campaigns at home.

LOST, Amnesty and SSP are just a few examples of attempts to surrender U.S. sovereignty at a time when our brave troops are fighting to preserve sovereignty for others in the world.

That's right. The Constitution requires a two-thirds vote in order for a treaty to be ratified by the Senate. That's 67 Senators. The have a 51 member majority. Even if you include the RINOs, there should not be 67 votes for this treasonous treaty.
