Default Bill Promotes Math, Science Programs

By JIM ABRAMS
Associated Press
August 3, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congress on Thursday approved broad legislation to promote math and science skills and develop the technology needed to compete in the global economy.

The House-Senate compromise combines elements of five bills already passed by the House creating programs to encourage people to study and teach math and science, support high-risk technology research and increase funds for the National Science Foundation and other science-based agencies.

The House vote was 367-57. The Senate approved the America Competes Act on a voice vote.

This appears to be a reauthorization of the old Title III of some education act of the 1950's. I don't recall the name of the enabling legislation. Schools were given money to buy science equipment and hire teachers to improve the science and math curricula. I believe it also provided for low cost loans for students who wished to pursue a career in teaching. The loans were available to anyone with enough intelligence to fill out the application form.

More duplicate legislation. These idiots in Congress must think there is no one around anymore who remembers the legislation.

Don't worry about history, it has nothing to do with this country. Like Great Britain, who needs heroes and positive people to aspire to be like? They don't think Churchill is important for young Eurabians to know so I think we should do away with the founders, Lincoln, the Civil War and anything else that would help unite the people of this country and support patriotism. Then let's fill all those history hours with more math and science, forget about learning how we once lived together, and focus only on how we can be better government lackies. Who needs to learn about and from the past anyway?
