Default Senate leaders revive immigration bill

Senate leaders revive immigration bill
By Donna Smith

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate leaders agreed on Thursday to revive a stalled immigration overhaul after lawmakers worked out a plan to overcome conservatives' objections to a bill that would legalize millions of immigrants.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), a Nevada Democrat, and Sen. Mitch McConnell (news, bio, voting record), a Kentucky Republican, said in a joint statement the Senate would reconsider the legislation after completing work on an energy bill some time next week.

I guess a failed cloture vote doesn't even hold for a week in Washington these days.

Bush is pulling out all the stops, it's unbelievable what they're trying to do. Now, the Bush adnministration is trying to push the "border security" aspects of the bill, the part that's toothless and they don't care about.

Giving this "no amnesty" to illegal immigrants is just one more dangerous precident from a body of elected officials that have done little to protect legal citizens. Rights and special priviledges are being given to select members of American society to the detriment of average Americans who obey the law. Our current crop of elected officials have an established record of not listening to the people and need to be replaced by people who will represent the legal citizens.

"Look, we need to do this without animosity and without amnesty," Bush said. "I know there are some people who I guess believe that we could just kick them out of the country. That's just totally impractical. It won't work.

And how does he know something won't work unless he tries it? According to various reports I've read on the subject, over half the illegals have come into the country under his watch. Perhaps he just doesn't want to admit to another in a long line of failures. So instead, he wants to cover up his malfeasance with half ass legislation passed by the Congress.

And we foot the bill while he rides off into the sunset with all the illegal servants he needs.

Call your Senator... again! Regardless of their announced position on the topic, tell them "NO!" to this legislation.

Angry Re: Senate leaders revive immigration bill

I keep hearing, "It's impractical to think about sending all of them back". BULL!!!!!! I am TIRED of my salary being robbed, stolen and pilfered by the Government to pay welfare, social security and other benefits to people who don't belong here. Another "excuse" we keep getting thrown at us, "They will work jobs Americans don't want or won't work". Well, IF our Government didn't pay out more welfare to healthy, lazy bums than these jobs pay, they would have to work them. Under the current situation, WHY would they do this hard work for less money they the government is paying them to lay on their backs for free? We do have many people on welfare who REALLY need the help, but there are many more who are defrauding the system and getting by with it. I'm just tired of it!

It's not impratical at all, it's necessary. It won't happen over night, but I'm willing to bet that if you pulled jobs, welfare, SS, medicade, free medical, free schooling, and all of a sudden there is little incentive to sneak into the country.. or stay here.

Since the federal government/judges have squashed any and all state legislation created that address these things (all the while continuing to force states to provide illegals with hand outs), it is very clear that there is no interest from DC to fix anything.

It's time to rally once more. Perhaps if we spoke up even louder this time this horrid bill would die for good. I thought the message was VERY clear last time, but apparently Bush and many representatives are either hard of hearing or have short term memory loss.

No one trusts them to do what they say! Secure the boarders first! Deportation does not have to happen in one fell swoop! As it begins to happen case by case, many will deport themselves. They would also be more likely to deport themselves if their benefits here were dried up!

Bush's response - "we can't kick all of them out of the country" - is the corner in which these rascals like to paint those in opposition to this bill. It is used when the lies don't work and is further used in an attempt to get you and I to believe that what is being considered is the "only" way to attack the problem.

While I'm certain most of us would like to expell 12 to 20 million illegals instantly, the sad fact is we don't have a government willing or even capable of doing that, in my opinion.

The other sad fact is, we don't have a government willing or even capable of implementing the kind of sweeping reforms and promises contained in the bill.

That's why most of us have for years now simply been asking the government to secure the borders - build a fence, patrol it. Our government has ignored the request - even after 9/11!!

Our federal government is, in my opinion, dysfunctional to the point it has little capability or will to actually solve problems - especially important ones. Of course, when I say "government" what I'm really talking about are the politicians and bureaucrats running it.

Simply passing legislation chocked full of provisions, even when we are clearly incapable of and obviously unwilling to implement those provisions, has replaced any semblance of actually solving the problems facing our citizens.

Factionalized special interest groups make up the audience in front of which, and for which, most of our leaders perform. The results of this fact can be seen regarding the immigration bill - the accomodation of the wants and needs of 12 to 20 million people in this country illegally are being granted superiority over the welfare of the citizens. The voices of business demanding a never ending stream of cheap labor is heard loud and clear, while the voices of this nation's citizens are barely heard, if at all.

With Bush's latest empty, but well timed, pledge of more money for security the twice dead (last year and last week) immigration bill is now breathing new life. The tens of millions of citizens who were so happy last week with the results of their phone calls and e-mails to elected officials, are now faced with the reality that we have a POTUS, a Republican no less, and a Congress, that seems willing, even hell-bent, to betray the trust placed in them by the American people.

However, this should come as no surprise, as there has not been any recent administration or Congress willing to effectively tackle the illegal immigration problem and secure our borders - that's the major reason we're in this mess.

I suggest all of you contact your Senators again and restate your concerns about the bill.

I would also suggest you keep handy the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of your Congressmen - I think your going to need them!!

MD

Exclamation Re: Senate leaders revive immigration bill

I voted for Bush twice. I still think he was the "lesser of evils' - but, I also think he ought to now be impeached for not living up to his Oath of Office to protect our country from this foreign invasion. His; "this is not amnesty" matra makes me sick and is a insult to my intelligence. I hope and pray that the people of our country will find the strength to confront him on this one more time. Once we give citizenship to 40 Million new people who vote overwhelming Democrat, then you will find yourself with Abortion on Demand, Gay Marriage, dropping God from the Pledge, and the development of the "Ideal" Secular Socialist State. This is known as the "Law of Unintended Consequences" and it is the main reason most Democrats support this "nice" Bill. We need to dump Bush! He is too dangerous to keep as our "leader".

So true, and so sad. But as far as contacting your congresscritter via email, you'll probably run into a brick wall: my cc (Kirk) refeuses to receive his citizen emails.

Somehow, we have to get term limits!
