Question Free Republic : site for one issue extremists only

Jim Robinson has been going on a tear demonizing Rudy Giuliani, because Rudy (agreeing with the vast majority of Americans), is personally opposed to abortions on a moral level, but does not think that decent people who disagree and have or provide an abortion, should be criminals and sent to prison.

Anyone who posts any support for Giuliani at the site, if it's at all forceful, will be banned.

there is a LOT of energy wasted on this issue. On a practical and a logistics level, seemingly all for naught.

First, Roberts and Alito said at their confirmation hearings Roe was settled law. If even the most conservative jurists are forced by the confirmation process to make that pledge, how will Roe ever be overturned?

(Incidentally, Giulliani said justices like Scalia, Roberts and Alito are his idea of the justices he'd appoint as President. In the Reagan adminisration, Giuliani was the 3rd ranking person in Ed Meese's Justice Department.)

Secondly, even if Roe was overturned, what states would make abortion a criminal felony? In 2006, South Dakota voted on a referendum passed by its legislature to criminalize abortions and it was defeated 56% to 44%. If it can't win in socially conservative South Dakota, where can it win? Utah?

How far is it from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas?

Thirdly, what type of felony would abortion be if were criminalized? Who would be charged, the woman, the provider or both? Prison terms? 5 years, 10, 20? What would the country think of having people imprisoned in the 3 to 5 states that would criminalize abortion when it was legal in the remaining 45?

Finally, only Ireland, Spain and Poland among Western democracies have laws making women and doctors criminals if they participate in an abortion. Germany, has such laws, but interestingly they're OFFICIALLY unenforced. The Pope criticizes American Catholic politicians, but abortion is legal in Italy.

Whether Roe is overturned or not, the legal availability of abortions in the U.S. would remain unchanged in the vast majority of states.

So why all the fuss?

Be sure to watch Rudy's speech on the front page. I support Rudy because he's a TOUGH AS NAILS New Yorker, is another Milton Friedman on tax, spending and school choice, and is a HAWK on Iraq and terror.

Giuliani is not just a leader, he's an EFFECTIVE leader. If Rudy, Bob Gates and General Petraeus had been in charge in Iraq since 2003, the country would have been stabilized 4 years ago.

Normally, we don't allow complaints about other conservative forums but because this is a recurring event at FR, and because it is being discussed all over the Internet, I'll make an exception.

But here's the bottom line, Free Republic belongs to Jim and he can do anything he wants with it including purging members whenever he chooses.

There are plenty of other conservative forums where all Republican candidates can be discussed including here at GOPUSA.

Hi Terri,

That's why I signed up today at GOPUSA. Banned for supporting Rudy, even though I'd been a member there since 1998.

Sorry, didn't know about your policy....

but the topic heading said "rant" and I felt like "ranting".

No problem. It's not published so you would have no way to know.

As I said, this has affected a lot of people so there's no point in ignoring it.

You can talk about Rudy all you want here. Some will agree and some will disagree but then that's the whole point, right?

Enjoy!

regarding "all over the internet" this is from Sweetness and Light. Some background on Jim Robinson's current Anti-Giulinai Jihad :

http://www.sweetness-light.com/archi...-free-republic

excerpts :

...."Robinson’s latest anti-Giuliani, anti-abortion jihad is a typical bolt from the blue. For despite his current claims Mr. Robinson has never been much of a "social conservative."....

....FR’s earlier "mission statements" read more like a libertarian screeds than anything else. Ironically, the "mission statement" that graced the site circa 1999 was largely written by a libertarian who was himself banned in the May 1999 purges. It does not specifically mention any "social conservative" points, including abortion.

...in the ten or more years I have followed his postings Mr. Robinson has seldom mentioned abortion as a top concern. Yet now he is using abortion and other "social conservatism" issues to drive away many of the very same people he had previously encouraged at FR.".....

I'd like to see MORE states rights.
One state could outlaw abortion, another state would be more liberal toward it.

MORE STATES RIGHTS..

hi autocad... I'd be with you on that.

btw, that's why Rudy was accused of being "convoluted" at the debate on criminalizing abortion. Regarding Roe, he said he could see reasons to overturn it, (let the states decide), and he could see reasons not to overturn it (settled law).

same with "reasonable" restrictions of 2nd amendment gun ownership rights. Rudy said that should be left up to the states, but that the right to own guns is clear. It's just a question if any restrictions placed on owning them by the Feds or the states are "reasonable".

NYC was a having a crime crisis of muggings, murders, rapes, intimidation which made citizens fear for their lives in the early 90's. Among MANY other things, Rudy strictly enforced existing gun laws, but he said he strictly enforced ALL laws, including jaywalking, anti-graffitti, and took the "broken windows" approach to cleaning up the city.

I.E. one broken window left broken leads to chaos.
