EEOC -- Attacks The Salvation Army
By Paul M. Weyrich
April 25, 2007
Just when you think you have heard it all, along comes a story that is almost too ridiculous to be true. But it is. The idiocy of federal bureaucracies apparently is never-ending. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which might easily be called the Department of Political Correctness, has decided to take on the Salvation Army. Yes, the Salvation Army, that phenomenally successful assistance organization which began in Great Britain over one hundred and forty-years ago. The Salvation Army, which has helped thousands of people in countries all over the world, is being sued by the EEOC.
As most people are aware, the Salvation Army is a Christian evangelical organization the mission of which is to help the downtrodden, blind, sick, addicted and anyone else in need. "Army" personnel stand on street corners during Christmastime, ringing a bell on behalf of the poor.

Re: EEOC -- Attacks The Salvation Army
EEOC seems to be related to the ACLU--LAWYERS RUN AMOK!

Not really--they blame them on James Dobson and Rush Limbaugh, and screech about Ann Graham Lotz's comments about our expulsion of God from our nation.
[sarcasm] Let's put the Salvation Army totally out of business and send those religious crazies home--they have no place in secular society--everybody knows that the work they do is better left to the federal government
[/sarcasm off]

It all started in a thrift store in Framingham, Massachusetts. Two Hispanic employees were given one year to learn English in order to speak the language of the country in which they live and the language spoken by other employees. They failed to do so; in turn the employees were fired. The EEOC filed a lawsuit against the Salvation Army claiming the employees had suffered "emotional pain, humiliation and embarrassment" as a result of the English-only policy.

Re: EEOC -- Attacks The Salvation Army
Another example of a government bureaucracy running roughshod over the citizenry. If the EEOC managed to sue the Salvation Army out of business, what government bureacracy would take its place?
I think I can safely say the new bureacracy would take 15 years to get up and running and would cost 50 billion dollars more than estimated and then those in the bureacracy would say, "What? You want me to hang around with those people? Who do you think I am, a *>bleep< in the Salvation Army?"
*You know they're not going to be allowed to say soldier. Not politically correct.

Re: EEOC -- Attacks The Salvation Army
Once again, this is proof positive that the federal gov't does nothing...NOTHING... right. This is immoral and unconstitutional. I know of know right that guarantees a right to work in a private organization. I'd provide legal counsel for the SA and ask the EEOC to provide proof of such a right. Then I'd beat the hell out of each lawyer.
This is really ticks me off. I have great respect for the SA and its policies. Their president draws a tiny salary and they run a pretty well regulated organization. I've volunteered with them for the last few years and they always make me feel welcome. They are the best run non profit I have volunteered with. They are more organized and have more adept leaders than any other non profits. Thus, I understand the neccessity of their requirements. The EEOC has no legal grounds for this case. I hope they burn in hell right away!

Re: EEOC -- Attacks The Salvation Army
Thanks for the info. Looks like the government is just looking for excuses to make slaves of all of us as fast as they can. We need to remind them that "They" are our "Public Servants" by their own free will as elected officials...not "We" their "Servants!"

Re: EEOC -- Attacks The Salvation Army
IF they have accepted funds from the feds, for example Emergency Shelter Grant funding through HUD or FEMA money, they have to sign an agreement that they won't force people to attend religious services, nor discriminate against minorities, the handicapped, etc. etc. That is probably what gave EEOC its foothold.
We had Hurricane Katrina evacuees here (in fact, we still have them and they are still receiving benefits, plus they displaced local needy people from services), and the Salvation Army and other faith-based services received some FEMA money. Some of the evacuees were smoking crack in the Salvation Army shelter and SA couldn't do anything about it because they were displaced and therefore protected.
