Default Republican Candidates ~ Sowell

By Thomas Sowell
April 10, 2007

Can you remember seeing a Republican expressing outrage?

Democrats express outrage 24/7. Ted Kennedy alone has expressed more outrage than the entire Republican Party.

Democrats can lie their way around the world before Republicans can manage to mumble the truth.

The case for conservatism cannot be too hard to articulate. Talk radio is dominated by articulate conservative talk show hosts.

Even the liberal print media have some very articulate conservative columnists like Charles Krauthammer and others. There are also very articulate and conservative editorial pages at the Wall Street Journal and other newspapers, as well as similarly articulate conservative periodicals like City Journal, The Weekly Standard, and Commentary.

Thanks for posting that article, Terri. Interesting stuff. This is one article (or idea) that I would like Sowell to expand upon. I always thought that Sowell was somewhat libertarian in, at the very least, his fiscal ideals. This article clearly displays some strategy and pragmatism. It's nice to read a thoughtful and poignant piece by one of the greatest conservatives in print today. Hopefully, Sowell will expand upon this topic and offer even more insight into the state of Washington politics today and how it affects and is affected by the electorate.

But hasn't he heard Giuliani expressing his desire to allow his wife to sit in on cabinet meetings and confer with her on policy decisions?

Sorry, I'm not voting for Giiuliani's wife!!

Nor Newt for the reason Sowell gave and for one he didn't give, which is, he has way too much baggage. The sound of all the leftist rhetoric still rings in my ears.

I can understand why the liberal press pretty much avoid discussing Huckabee, Hunter and Tancredo. But why does conservative talk radio host talk about and conservative commentators write about primarily Guliani, McCain & Romney who are NOT truly conservative? I like Gingrich, but unfortunately, he has some baggage. You want articulate and conservative? Tancredo and Huckabee are conservative but are they articulate? That leaves Duncan Hunter. He is both conservative and extremely articulate. Do your homework folks... support the best candidate AND hold the commentators and radio talk show hosts accountable for overlooking and ignoring those candidates who should be getting the attention.

Dennis Miller had Tancredo on last week. Many other conservative shows don't have formats that allow for many or any guests, so your analysis is unfair. Medved talks about the litany of candidates, but it makes sense to limit the analysis to the front runners. Time is money for a radio show and most listeners certainly want to talk about the most notable candidates.

I'm expecting a discussion by "conservative" commentators and talk show hosts that at least do a better job of analyzing all the candidates. Should they only fully discuss or write about the "front runners" that the liberal press are only too happy to have us choose from? Who then dictates the conservative agenda? Please see how Duncan Hunter has done in the three straw polls. Isn't he a "front runner" in this regard? Gingrich certainly is in the middle of the pack, but he already gets lots of conservative press.

Medved has interviewed Hunter. Gingrich gets press because he lead the GOP revolution during the Clinton years. Don't negate the context behind each candidate. Sure, it's unfair that your favorite is not getting equal press, but my favorite isn't even running. When did conservatives start expecting fairness in life?

Right, I forgot... fair & balanced IS probably too much to expect. I guess Brownback should be on my list too... (see, I can even leave someone out). I guess only the big money will continue to get comprehensive press. I suppose it's too much to expect and to hope for, that the conservative pundits would rise to a higher level of dialog. Thanks for the reality check.

Who's your favorite, Billary?

Brownback's lack of support for the war hurts him with many conservatives.

Hunter would be great but it's hard for a little known congressman to raise his profile while running for president if he hasn't already found a way to do it sooner.

Tancredo's negatives, unfair as they are, are insurmountable.

And Gingrich just can't stop shooting himself in the foot. I offer the Kerry global warming debate as evidence.

And of course we all know about the front runners.

That's why so many people are hoping for Fred Thompson.
