Tancredo makes it official, will run for White House
Rocky Mountain News
He's in.
Rep. Tom Tancredo took to the airwaves in Iowa this morning to officially join the Republican race for the White House.
He's among the longest of long-shots in a crowded GOP field, but already the Littleton Republican is declaring a victory of sorts.
The way Tancredo sees it, just by running he has won a place in the 2008 debate for his crusade against illegal immigration.

At last - a conservative Republican enters the race! Given the initial candidates, one has to wonder if the GOP is still the home for conservative politics.
Go Tom Go!

Tom Tancredo is well known for his activism on the illegal immigration issue, however he is far from a 'one issue candidate'. If people were not so lazy they could just look up his voting record, he is a true Conservative, unlike McCain or Giuliani.

Well, I'm not so lazy. I know his voting record.
I also know that he very reluctantly supported the surge in Iraq.
And I know he isn't going to be president. And so does he.
His value is in shining a light on the immigration debate and that is what he will be doing as a candidate.

Tancredo unfortunately in my opinion does not have the money or the support to win, but he will be a great sounding board for some of the faux conservatives that are running. I still hope Newt makes the decision and asks Tancredo to be his running mate.

My goodness. A true conservative tosses his hat into the ring. Maybe the GOP is more than a splinter group of the Democrats after all. I will vote for Tom Tancredo given the opportunity. He must be strong of heart and a good communicator to be elected in liberal Colorado.

Oh for heaven's sake. Tom is a one issue guy. He is not even giving up his 6th Dist. seat in the House to run for the Presidency. Please, he will not win but may bring illegal immigration to the confab where now some 9 GOP candidates agreed to debate the issues. We all know, unless we are as delusional as the Dems, that there are only 5 people even in this race. And two of them are not in yet, Fred and Newt. So please don't waste your money or support on lower tier people. This is a serious election in '08 and to squander any unity is inane and insane.

Re: Tancredo makes it official, will run for White House
So what I am reading is that we should just support one of the "five," even if they are RINOs, because they are the only ones with a chance to win?
I'm confused. For months, I've watched people complain and complain that there is no real conservative candidate, and then one day after a true conservative throws his hat in the ring, it's "don't waste your vote on him, he doesn't have a chance."
This is really schizophrenic. I don't care how much a Hannity or Rush pushes Rudy or Newt or Fred, I'm still not going to vote for someone who is socially liberal just to beat the Dums. I don't want a choice between Socialism or Socialism Lite, I want a Conservative choice. If there isn't one, then the GOP is STILL NOT GETTING IT.
And if they aren't getting it, they deserve to go down. The base is conservative. Why are we allowing them to push RINOs on us all the time? Vote for the TRUE conservative even if he DOESN'T have a chance to win (which at this point, I just don't buy, it's too early). At least then the GOP can look and see where they are losing votes, and maybe get the message.
This isn't a damn football game. We need to change our government, and right now they are still playing us for fools with this election bs. I'll vote for Tancredo, because illegal immigration is the number one fight we have. And before you start in on me, yes, it is connected to the war on terror.
Let's start giving Tancredo some grassroots support. He gets it.

Re: Tancredo makes it official, will run for White House
I've supported Tom ever since he ran for the Sixth District here in Colorado - he's a real conservative, smart and eloquent, wonderful family man, balanced, with a moral and exemplary character, and apparently able to carry his own outside his Republican district he's led (even though other areas in Colo. and in Denver are liberal). He's not afraid to vote for what's right, even though in a couple of instances, I've disagreed with his votes. But, you're right, and he knows it: he will not be elected president and it may not be politically astute to put him on the ticket; however, he is bringing the immigration issue to the forefront and may be an asset in a future Cabinet position. He's the real deal, and that's hard to find in DC.

You should support anyone you want.
And those who feel that a particular candidate has no chance to win are free to say so.
We are very early in the 2008 presidential campaign. Right now there are a lot of candidates. The field will narrow and some folks will be happy and some will be unhappy.
That's just the nature of politics.
