Default The Lost Scandal

The Lost Scandal
By Robert Novak - RCP

WASHINGTON -- Denis Collins, a Washington journalist on the Scooter Libby jury, described sentiments in the jury room reflecting those in the Senate Democratic cloakroom: "It was said a number of times. . . . Where's Rove? Where are these other guys?" Besides presidential adviser Karl Rove, he surely meant Vice President Dick Cheney and maybe President Bush. Oddly, the jurors appeared uninterested in hearing from Richard Armitage, the source of the CIA leak.

George W. Bush lost control of this issue when he permitted a special prosecutor to make decisions that, unlike going after a drug dealer or mafia kingpin, turned out to be inherently political. It would have taken courage for the president to have aborted this process. It would require even more courage for him to pardon Scooter Libby now, not while he is walking out of the White House in January 2009.
That just isn't going to happen now. I expect that Libby will be pardoned but it will be at the end of the Bush term just as such pardons have always been done.

Libby should never have been tried especially since Armitage went to Fitzgerald in the first place. It was all political and cost the American taxpayer but of course the lib/dumocrats wanted blood so Libby became a scapegoat. What a farce and a man's life has been ruined just like the Border Agents and the Deputy Sheriff in Texas- another US Attorney run amok.

I think we, as conservatives, have to be consistent with regards to the rule of law. Scooter was found guilty of perjury and we should expect him to be punished. That being said, this is clearly not the same as the Clinton perjury. Clinton lied in a civil case and his lie was material to the underlying case. Clinton lied for a reason. Libby on the other hand lied (if he did) for no reason. His “lie” was material to no crime. So, in my opinion his punishment ought to entail no jail time. Community Service and probation. Clinton should have been removed from office.

What a disgrace. Lady Jusice no longer wears a blindfold. The D.C. crowd is a disgrace - Democrat and Republican. We have a "conservative" President that wants to reward law-breakers. Many members of Congress are guilty of much more significant crimes than Mr. Libby (if he is guilty of a criminal act.) Can we just fire them all and start with a clean slate.

We no longer elect patriots, we elect self-serving bureaucrats.

GWB needs to rectify his error for allowing this mess to have taken place by providing an immediate and complete pardon for Libby.

Yes, we could.

The people have the power to do exactly that at the polls. But they will not. It's the price we pay for an uneducated, uninformed, uninvolved electorate.

I believe the president will pardon Libby but it will not be until the end of his term.

Abez how can you talk about the rule of law when this was a case of judicial abuse by a loose cannon federal prosecutor? This guy should be in shakles now as well as the perpetrator of the entire scam; Joe Wilson.

Drudge had a report on the Wilsons and their move from WCD to Sante Fe. How heart warming!! Wilson is a lying piece of crap and should be doing hard time making gravel out of large rocks in West Texas. Wilson and Plame will continue to play the victim and squeeze as much blood money out of their scam as possible. I thought there was a law against people making money off their illegal activities. Oh, they have to have been convicted of a crime first. Something the Wilsons have not.
