McCain Says lives 'wasted' in Iraq

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential contender John McCain (news, bio, voting record), a staunch backer of the Iraq war but critic of how President Bush has waged it, said U.S. lives had been "wasted" in the four-year-old conflict. Democrats demand the Arizona senator apologize for the comment as Sen. Barack Obama did when the Democratic White House hopeful recently made the same observation.

"Americans are very frustrated, and they have every right to be," McCain said Wednesday on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman." "We've wasted a lot of our most precious treasure, which is American lives."

McCain, who repeated his assertion that U.S. troops must remain in Iraq rather than withdrawing early, made the "wasted" remark after confirming to Letterman what has been clear for at least a year or more — that he's in the running for the 2008 Republican nomination.

Looks to me as though McCain has made his swerve hard left. And then he says this on the Lefty Letterman Show!

Now he's apologized .... to someone, I'm not sure who because all the big time conservatives are at CPAC2007 and Maverick is a no show. I didn't watch Letterman last night. Did the Senator specify which party's nomination he was seeking? Could it be he's hoping to go for the second spot on a Clinton ticket?

Maybe he's planning another reach across the aisle to get Crosby Stills and Nash to sing his campaign tune: "Wasted on the Way".

mcain knows all about wasted lives...only they are not being wasted in iraq...it's d.c. mclame has lost it...he's the only one in the U.S. that still thinks he's presidential material. There is little wonder that terrorist nations scoff at the sincerity of committment of the U.S. ...mcain, kerry, klinton, kenned y,reid, spector, obama ,boxer fienstine, feingold,e dwards, byrd, schumer, levin,..OMG i can't go on...i'm gonna be sick.

McCain explains 'wasted' remark

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Thursday said he used the wrong word when he told CBS personality David Letterman the Iraq war has "wasted" American lives.

McCain announced Wednesday on "Late Show with David Letterman" that he will be a candidate for president in 2008, and plans to announce his candidacy formally next month.

I dont think making excuses for what you've said after being reprimanded "makes it okay". mcains been in the senate for the entirety of the Iraq conflict... has anyone here ever heard him take personal responsibility for "wasting" American lives... NOT...he always seems to find someone else to blame for their "wasting"...as if...had he been "in charge" the loss of life would somehow have been justified in his view. I've been scolded here...and rightly so...for saying that should we leave iraq prematurely that our troops lives would have been wasted. i've thought long and hard about my flippant use of the english language and agree that no American service persons lfe has ever been "wasted" in their effort to complete their mission. mcain stinks and should just shut-up.

As Kaus points out (kausfiles.com), pro-borders advocates shouldn't want McCain so weak that he drops out quite yet.

After all, once he is out he's got nothing to lose anymore and he can go full bore trying to pass the Kennedy Anarchy bill in the Senate.

A few months down the road, then it will be OK for McCain to drop out.

I have absolutely NO concern that McCain could ever win the Republican nomination in 2008, so I say, go for it, John!

I guess what really raises the hair on my neck is:

Politicians can just apologize, and they are forgiven.

It's not that easy with me...I want to see repentence. Otherwise, I assume they still feel the same way.

or worse yet...once he realizes he has no chance at being the president there is nothing to stop him from going over to the other side as a fulltime dem...but either way he's voting with them much of the time now.
