GOP Rep. Charles Norwood of Georgia Dies

Rep. Charles Norwood, Jr., a Georgian who rode the Republican tidal wave in 1994 that gave the GOP control of the House, died Tuesday after battling cancer and lung disease.

The 65-year-old Norwood, who also was a dentist, died at his home in Augusta, Ga., his office said. House members debating the war in Iraq briefly interrupted proceedings to pause for a moment of silence in his honor.

Norwood suffered from a chronic lung disease and later developed metastatic cancer that spread from his lung to his liver. He had declined further treatment last week and returned home to Georgia to receive hospice care.

Condolences to Rep. Norwood's family.

I'm wondering if this seat will stay GOP or a Dem be elected.

We have lost a real gentleman in Charlie Norwood. We was genuine and warm and made you feel that who you were and what you had to say was important.

I remeber the first time I met him. It was in his office in Augusta. I drove over from Atlanta to discuss the Healthcare Issues and especially what Hillary was trying to do to the healthcare system in our country at that time.

Congressman Norwood came out of his office with shirt sleeves rolled up and open collar and said "little lady. what's on your mind today and come on in my office and let's discuss it and see how I can help".

He gave me over an hour of his time and I will never forget that. Nor will I forget the fact that he was not in Congress for fame or to make a name for himself, but to make things better for the people he served. He was a sweet, caring man and I am so sorry for his family and their lose. We are praying for them.
