Valentine's Day: Have The Ladies' Mags Lost The Love?
By Kristen Fyfe
February 13, 2007
Valentine's Day. The words evoke romance, tenderness, cards, candy, and flowers.
Given that the media often turn to the subject of love at this time of year, the Media Research Center's Culture and Media Institute decided to find out what women's magazines are writing about in their February issues.
The answer is, pretty much what you'd expect -- from Playboy. In 11 of the top-selling monthly women's magazines (including top-seller Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, InStyle and Woman's Day) with a combined circulation of more than 30 million, messages about S-E-X outnumber messages about love and romance more than two to one.

Re: Valentine's Day: Have The Ladies' Mags Lost The Love?
When our pre teens, teens, and young women are bombarded with this from an early age, what are they to think? They get one message from conservatives who are trying to teach them values, and another message from society as a whole.
Other than National Geographic and Humpty Dumpty, I have not had a magazine in my home for over 20 years. There is just nothing worth spending my money on in the marketplace.

Women regularly lament that as a group they are objectified by men. Ironically, magazines written for women feed that very fire. A parade of headlines in February issues, like "Flaunt Your Booty" (Seventeen), "Drop 10 Pounds Fast" (Family Circle), and "What Guys Really Want" (CosmoGirl!) constantly reinforce the message that women are mere sexual objects, and that all that matters is looks and sexual aptitude.

The Great Divide between liberal and conservative---> needs to keep widening. It's the liberals pushing all immorality and then they whine that they're only "s-objects."
I hope more and more "abstinence until marriage" groups get started. Glad to hear of the one(s) mentioned.
Great article.

I haven't heard any whining for some time now... they're all at strip pole dancing exercize classes, I guess.
The "women's movement" is/was the greatest farce ever put over us.

No, sex is what sells -- at least in the minds of magazine editors.
|
Not just in the minds of mag. editors, but in movies, commercials, print ads, etc... and not just in their minds... IT DOES SELL. If it didn't, they wouldn't be using it, or if they did, they wouldn't be successful. The sales of these magazines is proof that sex sells.

They are not all bad, how about Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Home Beautiful, Discover, Archaeology and a host of others. They may not be to your taste but there are plenty of good magazines available.

It's quite amazing how the language has evolved. Simply substitute "dirty" or "smutty" for "edgy" and you have what it's all about.
People will always have a fascination (sometimes fatal) with formerly "taboo" themes. What I have against this encroaching war on morality is the more people are involved in this type of thing, the more dirt and smut they require to keep them happy (?) horny (?)
