Perry orders anti-cancer drug for schoolgirls

Austin--Gov. Rick Perry ordered Friday that schoolgirls in Texas must be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, making Texas the first state to require the shots.

The girls will have to get Merck & Co.'s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, that are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer.

Are the children of conservatives likely to become sexually active by the age of 12? Somehow I doubt that. It should NOT be up to the government to tell parents they MUST get their girls vaccinated. An advertising campaign to get the word out about the vaccine would be good.

I'm sick of the government mandating this and that which reminds me, the cost of this vaccine is astronomical.

But he has said the cervical cancer vaccine is no different than the one that protects children against polio.

He's a liar. They have no idea 40 years from now what will be the repercussions of this vaccine. It could be new and improved varieties of cancer. Children didn't have to have sex to get polio, either. All they had to do was be in a crowd during the summer, for the most part.

This is another overreaction by our elected officials and I'm now in the midst of an e-mailing conversation with my state senator, (who apparently answers his own e-mails and is one of the sponsors of the bill in Wisconsin) and he says there is a misconception about the bill and he'll let me know what it is. I'll pass it on when I get the word.

The scariest part of this whole thing is that Gov. Perry has multiple connections to Merk, the makers of Gardisil, and they don't even know how well it works. From the Gardisil website:

GARDASIL is the only vaccine that may help guard against diseases that are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) Types 6, 11, 16, and 18:

and:

GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it is important to continue regular cervical cancer screenings.

GARDASIL will not treat these diseases and will not protect against diseases caused by other types of HPV.

Also, he says that this vaccine is no different than the polio vaccine, then let the CDC add it to the list of childhood vaccines, he shouldn't be involved in it at all.

And why is this vaccine just for girls, why not boys????

He's jumped the gun, and shown EXACTLY who he feels he's responsible to.

Merck & Co. is helping bankroll efforts to pass state laws requiring girls as young as 11 or 12 to receive the drugmaker's new vaccine against the sexually transmitted cervical-cancer virus.
Some conservatives and parents'-rights groups say such a requirement would encourage premarital sex and interfere with the way they raise their children, and they say Merck's push for such laws is underhanded. But the company said its lobbying efforts have been above-board.
With at least 18 states debating whether to require Merck's Gardasil vaccine for schoolgirls, Merck has funneled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country.
A top official from Merck's vaccine division sits on Women in Government's business council, and many of the bills around the country have been introduced by members of Women in Government.

A government advisory panel has recommended that all girls get the shots at 11 and 12, before they are likely to be sexually active.
But no state has yet to add Gardasil to the list of vaccinations youngsters must have under law to be enrolled in school.
Merck spokeswoman Janet Skidmore would not say how much the company is spending on lobbyists or how much it has donated to Women in Government. Crosby also declined to specify how much the drug company gave.

NOW THEREFORE, I, RICK PERRY, Governor of Texas, by virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas as the Chief Executive Officer, do hereby order the following:

Rules. The Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner shall adopt rules that mandate the age appropriate vaccination of all female children for HPV prior to admission to the sixth grade.

This executive order supersedes all previous orders on this matter that are in conflict or inconsistent with its terms and this order shall remain in effect and in full force until modified, amended, rescinded, or superseded by me or by a succeeding governor.

Texas has just elected a representative who has been given the authority to march into homes, and DEMAND that young schoolGIRLS be administered an experimental drug that will make them SAFER to have SEX WITH!

I'm not in favor of this being a mandate, but I would have my daughter vacinated. How many wives have been infected because their husband fooled around? My sister was.

This is twice is one week where a Texas Republican has acted like a liberal Democrat. I used to feel safe here.

One thing is certain, MY daughters will not be getting this shot, and they WILL remain in the public schools.

We've been away on vacation and come back and THIS is what we come back to? I didn't vote for that Demonrat (in Republican clothing) and he's really done it this time. My kids are grown, but I have 2 11 year old granddaughters and they WILL NOT take this vaccine. I was listening to local talk radio this morning and the wife of a OB-GYN says this vaccine is dangerous, that they have been very active in investigating this. Perry has overstepped his bounds on this one and my state senator and rep will be hearing from me on this, you can bet. How DARE they is right!
