Default More Targets

Oliver North

For months, advisers to President George W. Bush have been trying to convince the commander in chief that more U.S. troops in Iraq will improve prospects for victory. Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), both recently returned from Iraq (and a courageous surprise stopover in Ramadi, capital of bloody Al Anbar Province) also support adding more American troops. Unfortunately, they are wrong.

"I believe there is still a compelling reason to have an increase in troops here in Baghdad and in Anbar province in order to bring the sectarian violence under control," McCain said after his visit. For his part, Lieberman said the idea of sending another 30,000 troops to Iraq is "exactly" the course of action he hopes to see the president take.

I believe Ollie is correct. What needs to happen is the Iraqi's start fighting in earnest for their own country. We've lost enough of our treasure; if they're not willing to fight for themselves, then perhaps we should threaten them with leaving, or something - to break this deadlock that seems to be ever upwardly deadly and never-ending. It just makes my heart sick to understand the number of young people who won't come home other than in a box.

There has to be a solution; I just pray that the Prez finds it and recognizes it and doesn't let the Demoncraps interfere.

I don't know that muslimes, in general, will ever be good military people. If you believe that certain traits can be genetically passed, it seems reasonable that their real strength is terrorism which they have practiced for nearly 1400 years. I'm not suggesting they lack courage but military discipline and large unit training are completely opposite how they have practiced warfare all these years. Instead of training them in American military style, they might have done better to train them as terrorists themselves and just turned them lose on Al Qa'eda and other such groups.

Quote:
A "surge" or "targeted increase in U.S. troop strength" or whatever the politicians want to call dispatching more combat troops to Iraq isn't the answer. Adding more trainers and helping the Iraqis to help themselves, is. Sending more U.S. combat troops is simply sending more targets.

I'm compelled to agree with Colonel North. We can never send enough troops to Iraq to rectify sectarian violence, but the Iraqi's could stop it, if they had to and wanted to. I say, "Let's make them have to...we can never make them want to!"

If they don't, then, "We did our best!"
