George Orwell's Predictions Come True
By Harris Sherline
November 4, 2009
George Orwell wrote two books over 60 years ago in which he predicted the future of society with remarkable prescience: "Animal Farm" and "1984". Many of his observations can easily be applied to the political situation in America today. Consider the following quotes from "Animal Farm," which was written in 1945:
"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
"To see what is in front of one's nose needs a constant struggle." NOTE: This has become increasingly difficult in America today because of the failure of our media to meet its responsibility of "speaking truth to power" rather than submitting to it.

Animal Farm is an example of taking over by using thugs, like Napoleons dogs.

Re: George Orwell's Predictions Come True
Remember how the people in "1984" were encouraged to tell on their neighbors and friends and family anything that they consider to be subversive?
Remember how the White House exhorted people to "report any fishy information about healthcare reform out there?"
1984 has simply come 20 some years later than the book title indicates....
scary stuff, eh?

Well said Harris...
You know, there's another book...the Time Machine by HG Wells that every handout recipient should read...in that case, some big ugly cannibalistic Morlocks came up and ate those who had become Dependant on them.
A word to the wise.

You're right, sapient. I mentioned that here a few months ago. It can't be repeated often enough.
I'm so happy to see that Middle America has come alive and are not going to sit back and be devoured by the Obamorlocks.

Re: George Orwell's Predictions Come True
I only wish it was limited to the dull society that even George Orwell could have imagined.
Winston Smith, Julia, and even the Thought Police nark Mr. Charrington had jobs! Apparently Oceania wasn't into exporting their jobs to the Oceania-dominated Global Marketplace. At least, I didn't see that chapter.
The way I look at it, the Obama Administration is a double-plus-ungood situation for the rest of us.
