Magazine's 'satirical' Obama cover stirs outrage
By SARA KUGLER
Associated Press
July 15, 2008
NEW YORK (AP) -- A satirical New Yorker magazine cover cartoon depicting Barack Obama and his wife as flag-burning, fist-bumping radicals drew outrage from the Democratic presidential candidate's campaign as it appeared on newsstands Monday.
The illustration, titled "The Politics of Fear and drawn by Barry Blitt, depicts Obama wearing traditional Muslim clothing -- sandals, robe and turban -- while his wife, Michelle, has an assault rifle slung over one shoulder and is dressed in camouflage and combat boots with her hair in an Afro.
A flag burns in a fireplace behind them as they exchange a fist bump, the affectionate greeting they used onstage the night Obama clinched the Democratic nomination. A Fox News anchor later referred to it as a possible "terrorist fist jab." A portrait of Osama bin Laden hangs above the fireplace.

The media is after this one for the second day.

Re: 'Scare tactic' — Obama slams Muslim portrayal
Andrea Mitchell, a very liberal commentator on CNN, commented that those who don't get the satire aren't sophisticated enough. Since the left-wing liberals, Democrats and the Obamas were outraged over the cartoon, is Andrea saying thay they're unsophisticated, dumb Americans?
It does prove that they can dish it out but they can't take.

It's definitely satire, there is no way that BHO would allow MO to carry a gun, other than that, it could be real.....

Re: 'Scare tactic' — Obama slams Muslim portrayal
Actually, I think the New Yorker simply meant to satirize all the conservatives who criticize BHO.
Yes, it may work more against him than for him, but this wouldn't be the first time liberals made a clumsy attempt to do something and got the opposite result. (One more reason to avoid excessive government regulations, one area where liberals' efforts frequently seem to be clumsy and counterproductive.)
Think About It, # 12 - you may be right - maybe it was all planned this way. I agree that

But my gut says, no, this is one of the clumsy, unplanned examples.

Agreed, and also as one lib pundit said, it was the left's instant-response, knee-jerk reaction that blew it. The left-wing attack machine is programmed to immediately rip into and denigrate even the slightest criticism of the Lord Messiah Obama, and that's exactly what it did. If the machine had played it cool and thought things over for a moment, it could have responded differently and changed the entire paradigm. Re: "Yeah right! See? That's how those right-wing redneck racists see the Obamas. Yaaaaayy, way to go New Yorker!
You gotta love it. They screwed themselves.
