Good morning Terri & http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/gopusa.gif
Welcome to our newest members minju, Josie, chrisjohn316 & DanGrantTX ~ http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif
A very sad http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif weekend. Some of our best and brightest are gone ~ they did what they loved to do and contributed enormously to the advancement of mankind. We will learn what caused this terrible tragedy and in so doing those that follow in these great missions will be much safer.
Didn't get to answer the questions yesterday so here goes.
Driving home from the bowling alley ~ looked up in the sky and saw some very strange looking vapor trails. The rest I heard on the car radio. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
The President's speech was http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif
I've watched many launches from my back porch. When the weather is clear you can watch the shuttle climb toward the heavens. It is an awesome sight indeed. One day I had hoped to travel to the Cape and see one leave the pad.
When man walked on the moon I was living in Miami and working for the Dade County School Board. I can remember all of the school "buzzing" about this accomplishment. Also remember that some people thought it was a "stunt" and that it never happened. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tqrolleyes.gif Probably libs/Dems.
Busy day today ~ Since "Bridgette" is on strike I guess I'll have to break down and spend some time on "domestic engineering". http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif

I'm ready for a fresh start Terri! Such depressing events lately.....
WELCOME! Come on in minju, Josie, chrisjohn316 and DanGrantTX! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif
So the memorial service in Houston is on Tuesday? Isn't that also the day that Powell addresses the UN SC? So much on the administration's plate isn't there? It's mindboggling.
RIM! Bridgette's on strike? She didn't tell me! OH NO! Heck, if I'd known she was unionized.....well.. ...nevermind. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rotflo.gif Have fun http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif doing that good ole domestic engineering stuff. I've got a bunch of the same to do around here today. YUK!
Hubby went to Ohio this weekend to visit his Mom. She's not doing well at all. We're in a war of words with her at the moment. We all feel, including her, that she should be here with us.....but she can't seem to make that final decision. She has no one there to help her...and we're too far away. It's been very difficult.
I'm going to start on my d.e. routines. Make it a wonderful day you all! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif

Good morning all. Tough weekend.
Terri-
A couple weeks ago I mentioned Clinton's "contribution" to my father's profession (Real Estate Appraiser). If you recall, he had 2 offices and over 20 employees, it's now just him & my mom. Well during Clinton's administration they raised the diminimus for loans from $50k to $250k. Banks were allowed to provide unsecure loans up to $50k, now they are allowed to provide unsecure loans up to $250k. Which put a lot of appraisers out of business because the banks were no longer required to obtain appraisals.

Good Morning All: Saber, I can relate to your problem. My mother was living alone and the wife and I did everything we could to convince her to come live with us. She enjoyed running her own house and was always independent. We would visit about every year - it was a long way. I finally got a call from a neighbor that she was sick and immediately went home - she died two days later - independent to the end. She did it, her way.
Sounds as if we may get some answers about the disaster this week. Powell's address is the day after the memorial.
Had to go give them another sample of my blood this morning so I'm running behind, as usual. Have a great day and I'll see you later.
Saber

Der Alte....my MIL is NOT independent. Ever since her husband and her daughter died within 6 weeks of each other..you can imagine that she went downhill fast. That was 5 years ago. She has quite a few physical disabilities that have progressed alot. She has to turn to her friends to open jars, take out the trash, write out checks, etc. Everyday stuff is becoming a problem and you can only rely on goodwill from friends for so long.

Hi Everyone! *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif
It's snowy, windy and cold here in the wild west. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/snoman2.gif
MSNBC is reporting a NASA memo that was supposedly widely circulated within NASA concerning a possible 7 1/2" gash from the foam damage. I have questions. How would they have seen that damage? *And why wouldn't they have kept the shuttle up while they tried to work out a rescue? This doesn't make sense to me.
There is also some talk around about the environmental movement adversely affecting the space shuttles. If Bobby comes in maybe he can comment on all this.
Conn, I do remember that conversation. It seems that Clinton had a lot of bad effects on the economy of this country but no one will ever convince his deaf and blind followers. They joined the Clinton Cult and they will always belong. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif
Saber, would your MIL feel better to go into assisted living where she is? These facilities are usually really great. My SIL spent some time in one and she loved it there.
The best headlines I've seen this morning were on the same page. "Bush will attend memorial service for lost astronauts" *and * "Clinton will attend Rolling Stones concert". *Kind of says it all about the two men. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tqrolleyes.gif

Good Morning to all,
WOW, what a weekend. I heard about the shuttle as I was getting ready to go skiing(sp?) on Saturday morning. Not a good way to start the day. All of the family members seemed to be taking the news pretty well. I feel you have to be a special kind of person to have a family member who is in a profession like the space program, police, fire fighter, and so on knowing that anyday someone could come up and tell you your family member is gone. My prayers are with the families and friends and co-workers of the Columbia crew. I also have immense admiration for President Bush and how he handled the entire situation.
Bobby
02-03-2003, 09:30 AM
Good morning to all.
I'm away from a television, so I can't comment too much on the memo. However, as far as how they would know is concerned, I can help a bit.
There are many cameras situated on the shuttle and on the ground which record the shuttle during lift-off. Some such as the ones mounted on the solid rockets and the external tank could possibly provide a very good picture of any wing damage.
The launch footage is analyzed very carefully after each launch, and that's why it was known that the insulation hit the wing.
As far as the environmentalists are concerned, they have been protesting shuttle launches for years. The main engines use a combination of hydrogen and oxygen, so the byproduct is a form of water. However, the solid rockets use some nasty propellants that the environmentalists don't like.
As far as a rescue mission is concerned, there are so many variables to consider. First, the reports are that the possible damage was analyzed and the determination was that it was not a factor for a safe return. That would be thing to consider as far as why they didn't stay up. You can formulate a number of rescue strategies, but that is not why the shuttle came home. It came home, because it was deemed safe.
Hope that helps,
Bobby
Terri
02-03-2003, 09:44 AM
Thanks for the explanation, Bobby. There is also a photo that supposedly shows this damage but to my untrained eye it doesn't prove anything. *Photo (http://images.maariv.co.il/images//news2/columbia0302034.jpg)
I know we are going to see all the second guessing and wild conspiracy theories start now. I hate that. I have no doubt that they thought it was safe or they would not have brought it home.

I find it wierd too Laurie. You would think it would be touted ad nauseum by the press about when it was going to be! I had understood it to be on Tuesday! Now even that doesn't seem to be a "fer sure". This is wierd if you ask me. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/ne_nau.gif

I've thought all along that Powell's speech would be Wednesday. I think we will probably hear the time tomorrow. The media seems to zero in on times and details just before something happens.
There are two interesting opinion pieces in War on Terror. Laurie posted Peggy Noonan's lastest article on the President's SOTU speech and the other is on Iraq and written by Colin Powell.

http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/boots.gif "Tween" chores ~ http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif and watching the NASA news briefing. Doesn't sound like much "new news". http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sarcasm.gif
There was a blurb on another website I read that said they saw a newsclip on CNN showing the shuttle over New Mexico which showed another object in the vicinity. I haven't seen this clip and haven't heard this mentioned by anyone else. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sarcasm.gif However, could there have been anything out in space that could have changed the attitude or trajectory of the shuttle? Bobby? Say, something whizzing past it?
Guess I'm one of those who believes it was an accident but would like some explanation other than an error in judgement on the part of NASA ~ or lack of funding.
Saber ~ my heart goes out to you for sure. It took many months of convincing before my parents moved up here from Miami so we could be around if they needed help. That was in 1984 ~ and my Dad died in 1991 here at home and then my Mom in 1997 here also. We wouldn't have been able to help much if they had stayed in Miami. They were very "independent" people but they also had the ability to reason that they would eventually need our help. If your MIL is adamant about staying where she is, maybe Terri is right and she could go into an assisted living situation. It is quite upsetting, but you can't make a person cooperate if they don't want to. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

<span style='color:purple' ><span style='font-size:11pt;line-height:100%'>Good Afternoon all.</span></span> I just finished reading all of the posts (just in the Precinct)since Friday night, especially the 8 pages on Saturday. Out on our campground at the Troop Challenge weekend, we also heard the news as it trickled in, with further and further details. The Sunday scout service obviously involved a prayer and silence for the astronauts and their families. Before I forget, I also want to welcome minju, Josie, chrisjohn316, and DanGrantTX.
Regarding the Trivia from yesterday, here are my throughts:
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Do you remember where you were when the space shuttle Challenger went down in 1986?
<span id='postcolor'>
Wow, I didn't realize how much older I was than a lot of posters in here. Heck, I barely qualify as a whippersnapper at all. Anyway, I turned 21 in 1986, which was also the year I graduated from college (in May), at least for my undergrad degree. I also did an internship for a record distributing company in Tampa, most of the first part of 1986, and continued working for them until the end of the year when I went back to school starting in 1987.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">What did you think about the condolence speech for the astronauts made by President Bush?
<span id='postcolor'> Pretty much what everyone else has stated. It was excellent, and appropriate in every way. For the record, Jewish people should never be offended, no matter how liberal they are, by anything in the Old Testament. Personally, even though I don't accept all of the New Testament for myself (in my religion), I have enough respect for the beliefs of others to rarely get offended by quotes from the New Testament, either, and accept it as the heartfelt belief of another religion or person.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Have you ever seen a shuttle launch in person?
<span id='postcolor'> Not in person, but I have seen the Challenger and the Columbia at Cape Canaveral. And like RIM, I have seen numerous takeoffs from afar, which are still quite visible almost anywhere from Florida.

Memory fails me, I was 4 at the time. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
The campout was great this weekend, but once again colder than expected. It was in the mid 40s both nights, and http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/madgo.gif Comcast gave a weather forecast indicating mind to high 50s as the low all weekend. So, I and all the other scouts froze our little heinies off. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sarcasm.gif I had great fun though, and ran one of the events. The weekend is a 10-year old tradition between three troops (which vary from year to year, depending on whom wants to participate), to give the ultimate test of scout skills, knowledge, resourcefullness, etc. in challenging conditions. I told Terri, I would not want to have to try some of the events they were doing. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Our Troop 100 has been attending since its existence, about five years ago. They had never won, and usually came in third of three. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif This year they won, and won big. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif HUGE esteem builder for the boys in our troop, and we get to carry the big trophy home with us for a year. The Troop (and the Crew) are becoming an extremely well-functioning team, and are masters of several important life skills. It is what scouting is all about.
Anyway, I need to now go read all the other threads, and do some work. See y'all later.

I did, however, manage to have a good date Saturday night with Andrea. It was one of the most amazing times I've had with her.

The photo of the shuttle on the pad is a good one - it was taken from the gantry that holds the shuttle in place and houses all the service cables and hoses. It is also how the astronauts get to the shuttle - just before launch it dissconnects and pulls back.
Its so warm today that I went out and checked to see if the grass needed cutting. It didn't, thank heavens.
