By DAFNA LINZER

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Saddam Hussein should have put up a fight or committed suicide, stunned Iraqis said Sunday after watching images of their fallen leader, haggard and humiliated, in American custody.

As news of his capture spread across the country, celebratory shooting erupted in Baghdad's streets, soldiers cheered and victims of his tyranny thanked the United States. Many said it marked a new beginning for Iraq.

But for some, his capture was a blow to hopes for Saddam's triumphant return, and his peaceful surrender was seen as a stain on Arab honor.

"He swore before the war that Iraqis would fight America, and then he didn't fire a single shot," said Kassem Shelshul, a 28-year-old chauffeur living in Baghdad. "We expected him to commit suicide or resist," he said after watching video of the captured dictator.

"I could not stand looking at him. When I heard the news of his arrest it was as though somebody told me my father had died," he said. "But when I saw his face, it was even worse." (http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/S/SADDAM_CELEBRATIONS_ AND_DOUBT?SITE=DCTMS &SECTION=HOME)

What is really more surprising is that the lib-dumborats seem to think that this guy should be kept in power. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif . If we can't agree that mass murderers should be brought to justice, then mankind is far worse shape than I thought.

HERE'S TO YOU, SAMDAMM http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/usflag22.gif

I think they are just sore losers. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif It's killin' them that the President is succeeding in anything. They will be beside themselves all week, month, year!

Back to the article. I hope this shows the Iraqi's who are still supporting sadaam what a coward they were following and obeying and won't continue to do so.

I think whats most interesting is the "jihad" and "martyr" aspect. Saddam wasn't willing to do what he commanded everyone else to do.

Had Saddam actually gone out in a blaze of fire or committed suicide, the US couldn't claim a victory and would have gotten a lot of bad press from around the world.

Looks like the US isn't all about killing after all. How could the "Great Satan" not obliterate their opponents?

I'm sure many Iraqis are considering that right now.

I have to admit that I was as puzzled as some of the Iraqis are. I thought for sure that he would never be taken alive. He's nothing but a coward the way all bullies are. Even his creepo sons went down fighting. If I sound blood-thirsty, it's because I am.

Saddam didn't want to be outdone by his buddy Bill Clinton, when it comes to being an outright sissy. Bill thought he had it won with his Wag the Dog antics of blowing up an aspirin factory and then forcing the taxpayers to pay the owner of the factory a $2 million settlement, but Saddam would not be outdone. Ordering the extinction of thousands of people and then pulling a Unibomber and living the last days of his life as a stinky, lice infected bum in a rat hole sealed the deal. Make no mistake though, both men are downright cowards, but the edge has to go to SODAMN INSANE!!

Saddam was and is a coward...any leader who moves around every few days is scared. When he was in power...you remember he never stayed in one place very long. That says to me he is a scared rabbit.

Saddam is like most of the inmates I deal with. he's a coward who'll roll over and whimper like a dog when faced with equal or superior force. If he's not at an advantage , he's just a scared little punk.

The building was hit with some heavy artillery beofre our boys went in. The sons, although wounded, fought the ensuing gunbattle to their deaths. Hopefully, the Iraqis will be thoroughly disillusioned with their former leader, especially the militants who ware out there killing (and dying) for their "fearless" leader.
